City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-21-0146 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 8840 Final Action Date:4/8/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO OBJECTION AND SUPPORTING THE CO -DESIGNATION BY THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE OF STATE ROAD 90/SOUTHWEST 8 STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 12 AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST 14 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "ROSA MARIA PLASENCIA WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, in October 2018, Rosa Maria Plasencia ("Plasencia") passed away at age 59; and WHEREAS, Plasencia was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Amigos for Kids, a local not -for -profit dedicated to ending child abuse in Miami -Dade County ("County"); and WHEREAS, Plasencia spent decades working to improve the lives of children in throughout the County; and WHEREAS, under her tenure, Amigos for Kids was named by The Children's Trust Program as program of the year and Amigos for Kids saw tremendous growth and reached over 25,000 elementary school students through its child abuse awareness education; and WHEREAS, Plasencia served as the chair of the Eleventh Circuit Task Force for the State of Florida's Child Abuse Prevention and Permanency Plan; and WHEREAS, in 2017, Plasencia was inducted into the Miami -Dade College Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Plasencia impacted the lives of thousands of children through various programs including the beloved Amigos for Kids Holiday Toy Drive; and WHEREAS, Plasencia dedicated her life to the protection and betterment of children throughout the County and the City of Miami ("City"); and WHEREAS, the County Board of County Commissioners passed Resolution No. R- 1100-19 on October 3, 2019 urging the Florida Legislature to rename State Road 90/Southwest 8 Street from Southwest 12 Avenue to Southwest 14 Avenue as "Rosa Maria Plasencia Way"; and WHEREAS, the City Commission would like to honor the memory of Plasencia by urging the Florida Legislature to co -designate that portion of State Road 90/Southwest 8 Street from 12 Avenue to Southwest 14 Avenue as "Rosa Maria Plasencia Way"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission declares no objection and supports the co - designation by the State of Florida for State Road 90/Southwest 8 Street from Southwest 12 Avenue to Southwest 14 Avenue as "Rosa Maria Plasencia Way". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six Secretary for sign installation within the newly designated roadways.
