OIARIO LAS AMERICAS
DEL VIERNES 19 AL JUEVES 25 DE MARZO DE 2021
Los triunfos de nuestros estudiantes
y graduados reafirman la mision del MDC
MADELINE PUMARIEGA
PRESIDENTA DEL MIAMI DADE COLLEGE
OPINION
Desde que abrio sus puer-
tas en 196o, Ia mision fun-
damental del Miami Dade
College ha sido transfor-
mar vidas con ensenanza
y experiencias de apren-
dizaje asequibles y de pri-
mera calidad, igual que
estimular el progreso eco-
nomico, civico y cultural de
nuestra comunidad.
Es mas, gran parte de los
alumnos que se han gra-
duado del MDC a to largo de
su historia conforman un
grupo de prominentes lide-
res civicos y empresariales.
En cuanto a los que cur-
san estudios actualmente,
puedo asegurar que van por
el mismo camino. Si los pu-
diera definir con una sole
palabra, usaria el termini)
"sobresaliente."
Ano tras ado, el College ha
salido victorioso en com-
petencies deportivas, con-
cursos de conocimientos,
y certamenes de publica-
ciones literarias y revistas
estudiantiles como Miam-
biance y Cafe Culture.
entre otras, tanto en el am-
bito estatal como el nacio-
nal, donde han ocupado
siempre los lugares mas
destacados. Este ado, The
Reporter, el periodico pro-
ducido por estudiantes del
MDC, volvio a ganar el ti-
tulo de mejor periodico de
su tipo en la Florida.
Nuestros alumnos tam -
Wen han participado en nu-
merosas conferencias, asi
como en pasantias de pres-
tigiosas institucionescomo
el Congreso de los Estados
Unidos y la NASA. Ademas,
obtienen codiciadas becas
como la 2021 Newman Civic
Fellow. el mas alto honor al
liderazgo de participation
estudiantil, otorgada re-
cientemente por el Campus
Compact a Quran Howard,
un alumno del Campus
Norte. Quran obtendra su
titulo universitario en una
de las tres ceremonies de
graduation que se Ilevaran
a cabo el t de mayo proximo
en el Marlins Park.
Esos logros son aim mas
impresionantes cuando
tomamos en cuenta los
numerosos obstaculos
que enfrentan en el ca-
mino a la obtencion de un
titulo universitario.
Muchos de nuestros es-
tudiantes provienen de ho-
gares necesitados (58% de
bajos ingresos, y un 49%
por debajo del nivel fede-
ral de pobreza), y mas del
5o% del alumnado son los
primeros de sus families en
cursar estudios universi-
tarios. Una realidad que el
MDC no pass por alto, se-
guimos creando numerosas
iniciativasy programas pare
que puedan Ilegar al final de
sus carreras. Ejemplo de ello
es el nuevo programa Rising
Black Scholars, que Ies pro-
porciona matricula gratis
haste por dos anos a estu-
diantes afroamericanos que
se graduaran este ano de la
ensenanza secundaria.
Todo Io anterior y mucho
mas ha propiciado que sea-
mos la universidad numero
uno en la nation por otorgar
mas titulos de asociado, es-
pecialmente a estudiantes
de minorias. Por cierto, el
96 por ciento de nuestros
graduados encuentran em-
pleo inmediatamente, sin
acumular deudas por pres-
tamos estudiantiles. Ade-
mes, alcanzan salarios mas
altos que el promedio anual
estatal.
Pero nada de eso habria
sido posible sin el esfuerzo
de nuestros estudiantes.
Sus triunfos son nuestros
triunfos, y nos motivan a
seguir adelante. Nuestra
mision es poder garantizar
que cada vez mas alumnos
tengan la oportunidad de
acceder a una education
excelente, y al exito en sus
vidas profesionales •
