To close the entire park is disasterous when the north entrance should be kept open as it always has been... many emails have been released to show that the only gain here is for the HOA of Hammock lakes neighborhood. The boardwalk will destroy the natural habitat and should not be allowed! No permits ... no construction!!! The County wants to turn a rare, untouched tropical hardwood hammock into a developed park with a fenced -in dog area and a boardwalk cutting through the forest. The plan, announced in August 2020, came in response to complaints from the affluent neighborhood of 12 houses bordering West Matheson Hammock park. The homeowners complain that the park creates too much traffic in their neighborhood (the roads are all public). Emails requested via Florida sunshine laws show that some of the PH - residents are real estate developers with ties to city officials, Public including Commissioner Xavier Suarez who's responsible for the Hearings plan. The land West Matheson sits on is popular among locals as a dog park, and beloved by nature lovers as one of the few tropical hardwood hammocks still untouched by South Florida developers. The county's plan would completely change the character of the park, but more importantly would risk the health of an exceedingly rare ecosystem. Tropical hardwood hammocks are only found in the part of the Everglades south of Miami and are home to countless endangered plants and animals. The water table within 50yds of the river River Amend moves in unison with the tide, called tidal flux.
