DECEMBER 3. 2020 TODAY'S NEWS MIAMI TODAY 7 Downtown Miami creating alternative to absent Art Basel BY KYLEA HE:SELER With the year winding down, Miami's Downtown Develop- ment Authority is ramping up funding for key initiatives and new activations. The organization will spon- sor "Alt-B," a play on words for "Alternative Basel." which will grant funds to local artists to activate storefronts down- town throughout December. Executive Director Christina Crespi told Miami Today. At least S50,000 and possibly more, she said, will be granted to art- ists who will take over vacant storefronts on Flagler Street and adjacent roads to showcase their art in the windows. Installations. she said, will vary from still art to dancers, and interest in the project is booming. Each artist, she said, will be given $2,500 for an activation, and each window will feature QR codes that visitors can scan to access information about both the artists and the property. "We really wanted to plan a unique activation space that the community can enjoy that will bring back a vibe to downtown," she said. Festivities will likely begin the week of Dec. 7 and run for a month. bringing tourists and locals alike to window shop and patronize local restaurants and retailers. Dec. 11, she said, will also see the return of "DwnTwn Movie Nights," the development authority's bi-weekly cinema series at Maurice A. Ferri Park. The season's first production. "Elf," will be screened at 6 p.m. Dec. 11, and patrons will have to reserve tickets in advance and observe social distancing protocols. Like "Alt-B," Ms. Crespi said, the movie series will promote a community feeling while pro- viding patrons an excuse to shop and dine out. Before Covid, she said, the authority had hosted food trucks and happy hours to coincide with the events, which often drew a crowd. Miami Today reported in September that the authority had planned to launch a 60-day pilot with delivery service UberEats that would have reduced some fees for local restaurants, but Ms. 'We really wanted to plan a unique activation space that the commu- nity can enjoy and that will bring back a vibe to downtown.' Christina Crespi Crespi said the pilot has not yet begun and details are still being negotiated with the company. Throughout the year, the orga- nization granted over Sl million to various programs including initiatives to distribute masks fice in downtown Miami that and hand sanitizer and provide local businesses with chairs and umbrellas for expanded outdoor dining. Additionally, Ms. Crepi said, it granted S 180,000 to Camillus House and Lotus House, two organizations working to combat homelessness in Miami. The authority. she said, has been working with Camillus House for over ten years to pro- vide employment as landscapers or part of a "cleanup crew." S40.000 of the grant, she said, will go toward buying 75 beds at Camillus, which is vital, as having available beds at shelters allows police and outreach work- ers to offer homeless individuals shelter. Another S40,000 will go toward their "Day Center Program, and $50.000 will be put toward a new Lotus House pilot program that will provide outreach and shelter beds to women and children. As part of its "Follow the Sun," campaign, the authority is also granting 5150,000 to private equity firm Blackstone. which has plans to open an of - is to create at least 200 jobs for employees earning an aver- age of $200,000 annually. The company, Ms. Crespi said, held a webinar in collaboration with the development authority to explain its decision to expand to Miami. A chief reason, she said, is the belief in Miami's diverse and growing talent pool. Under the authority's incen- tive fund program, Miami Today reported in August, new or relo- cating companies can earn cash grants of 5500 per employee for the first 50 jobs, 5350 per employee for the next 50, and S250 per employee after that. To qualify, a company must within three years create at least ten fulltime jobs. the average sal- ary of which has to be at least 125% of the city, county or state average. According to a spokesperson, Blackstone is hoping to hire 70% locals for the Miami office, rounding out the operation with transplants from othercities who will help get the new office going andcontribute to the economy by buying homes and patronizing local businesses. Monthly virtual town hall meetings target Doral executives BY ANA SOLER In August, influential His- panic business group CAMACOL expanded its services in west Miami -Dade with a collaborative venture with the City of Doral. Three months later, officials say their goal to help steer the local economy through the pandemic and beyond still stands. CAMACOL,orthe LatinCham- ber of Commerce, is one of the largest minority chambers in the country and the largest Hispanic business organization in the state. According to its website, its pro- grams "strengthen local business activity, promote economic de- velopment, facilitate intemational commerce, and serve the civic needs of the community and state" and have been doing so for almost five decades. Doral, according to the city's 2019 economic report and a study by the Florida International Uni- versity Metropolitan Center, has one of the fastest -growing econo- mies locally and is responsible for My hope for the future is that we have a true partner in the non-profit business community who can give these resources to our city's businesses.' Juan Carlos Bermudez 53,151 jobs, 55.4 billion in sales, and 4% of the total gross product in Miami -Dade since 2011. It is especiallysuccessful inhospitality and international trade. The pandemic took a toll on that success, but Doral is now bouncing back. said Manuel Pila, city economic development chief. "Our restaurants, hotels, gyms, events facilities, and other indus- tries that are oriented toward serv- ing the public have experienced the most difficulties," he said. "Even our trade and logistics sectors have beenaffected, especially in the ear- lier phase of the pandemic, though we have seen more bounce -back in the past few months in those general categories." The introduction of CAMA- COL, Mr. Pila said. has helped bring to Doral a new network of executives with experience in different industries that can help businesses reinvent themselves amidst the pandemic. One of those executives is the CEO, Pete De La Tone, who has more than 20 years' experience working in the Doral business sec- tor, launching the Business Forum Group at Doral in 2016. "What we are trying to do here [with CAMACOL Doral] is first and foremost work with businesses at all levels: large, medium, and small, but especially focusing on the small businesses that have been impacted in a very tough way be- cause of Covid-19," he said. Mr.Pila said the group is offering monthly virtual town hall meetings on various topics - including hos- pitality, real estate and healthcare -tohelp local businessownersand entrepreneurs. "These events have offered insight into the state of these industries in our city, and the ways in which some key movers and shakers are responding to the pandemic," he said. And Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez said the partnership is a boon for all parties involved. "With this partnership with an organization with such good his- tory like CAMACOL, we want to give businesses the assets to not just deal with this pandemic, but to Isar how to get better once we get out of it. My hope for the future is that we have a sue partner in the non-profit business community who can give these resources to our city's businesses." he said. Mr. De La Torre acknowledged that the impacts of the partnership are yet to be seen, but he remains optimistic that they will be seeing results by the first quarter of2021. However, he said, there has been tremendous interest and press cov- erage of the virtual events. "There's because it is still early, but when you look at the combined experi- enceoftheteamatCAMACOL, in- cluding myself, we believe we've got a track record of being able to help businesses in the past. Now with this new initiative, we want to continue doing it and listening to what the businesses really want and need," he said. The overall goal, said Mr. De La Torre, is to help maintain Doral's upward trajectory. "Donal is the fastest -growing city in the state and probably one of the fastest in the country, but they don't have an economic develop- mentdepartment, sotheirgrowth is more organic," he said. "What we want to do in the future is continue that growth, but in a more planned type of way." CITY OF MIAMI. DECEMBER 3.2020 Novella at literary society a real sleeper in pandemic BY MARILYN &ovom Karen Russell's novella "Sleep Donation," recently released in pa- perback, hits home with theurgency of today s headlines. So it's a bit of a shock to learn that it's been avail- able in digital format since 2012. "Sleep Donation" introduces readers to an eerily familiar dysto- pian society in the not too distant future that is wracked by an insom- nia pandemic. 'There is no cure. Victims are dependent on regular infusions of untainted sleep from healthy donors. Trish Edgewater, the book's protagonist, is top recruiter for the not -for -profit Slumber Corps. which operates a chain of sleep stations modeled on blood banks. Her success is attributed largely to the marketing value of her sister. Dori. one of the pandemic's earli- est victims, who died awake after 20 days, 1 I hours and 14 minutes without sleep. "locked Oightlessly insideherskull," Ms. Russell writes. Telling her sister's story, Trish cries and shakes, shoving Dori's picture in the faces of potential donors, and few can resist her. "What distinguishes me as a recruiter," she muses, "is that my sister's death is evergreen for me. a pure shock. the freshest outrage. I don't have to dig around with the needle: that vein is open on the surface." Infants, theirsleep patients large- ly uncontaminated by disturbing dreams, make the best donors. One baby girl Trishrecruitsprovestobe unique -the only known universal donor, the 0 negative of sleep. Asa wave o f bad pub l is ity c auses severe shortages in sleep stations and techs drain more and more sleep from BabyA'stinybody. Trish questions her own complicity in the sleep donation business. Even as she assures Baby A's parents that Slumber Corps will never overdraw their daughter, she reflects, "I make this promise at a moment when people are plunging their straws into any available centimeter of shale and water, every crude oil and uranium and mineral well on Earth, with an indiscriminate and borderless appetite. Fresh air, the sight of trees - these are birthrights and pleasures that we seen bent on extinguishing. Some animalswe've turned out to be." "Sleep Donations" is not the sort ofbook to lull yourselftosleepwith. As with many of the best horror stories, it creeps up on the reader slowly. detail by relentless detail. until it hijacks the imagination - and at the same time exposes the hypocrisies and evils of our time. Hannon City Clerk #33675 Foreign tourism's uptick to be slow, forecast says By JI.I TURNER THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Florida's tourism industry could start an uptick midway through 2021. although foreign travel will continue to lag for several years. according to in- formation posted online by state analysts. Short- and long-term outlooks from a panel known as the Florida Economic Estimating Confer- ence indicate people. mostly from other states. could travel to Florida in close to pre-coronavi- rus pandemic numbers in 2022. And with the state's tourism - marketing arm Visit Florida reporting a near 32% drop in visitors during the third quarter and a 34% fall so far this year, the latest state analyst projec- tions aren't far off from earlier forecasts. In September. Amy Baker, coordinator of the Legislature's Office of Economic and Demo- graphic Research. told members of the Joint Legislative Budget Commission a long-term outlook indicated a potentially quick recovery for all sectors of the economy outside of tourism, with the assumptions based on a vaccine for Covid- 19 available by the July 1 start of the 2021-2022 fiscal year. "We've always talked about tourism and the sensitivity of our economy to tourism as being an important concern and a potential downside risk. if anything were to happen," Ms. Baker told law- makers in September. "So, with the outbreak of coronavirus, we actually did see probably the worst that we will ever see hap- pen, in terms of that downside risk materializing." At that time. state analysts wrote that Florida's tourism - sensitive economy is particularly vulnerable to the longer -term effects of any pandemic and that several industry groups were predicting it may take at least two years to recover. "Previous economic studies of disease outbreaks have shown that it can take as much as 12 to 15 months after the outbreak ends for tourism to return to pre - disease levels. The magnitude of this event is greater," a report compiled in September for the Legislative Budget Commis- sion said. The September report came on the heels of Visit Florida posting a 60.5% drop in tourists during the second quarter of 2020 compared to the second quarter of 2019. "Current expectations are that leisure driving vacations will recover first. and then - in order - business travel, domestic air travel, and international travel," the September report said. "The tinting will be further influenced by the actual course of the dis- ease and the recovery from the recession." The outlooks posted last week indicate the state could be back to 30 million vi sitors a quarterby the third quarterof 202 I. Meanwhile, overall visitor numbers would be just short of'the fiscal year 2019 total by fiscal year 2022 and surpass record -setting 2019 by fiscal year 2023.
