Background of Item: In response to the JAG 2020 local solicitation announcement, the City of Miami submitted a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs and was awarded $234,888.00. This JAG award will provide funding to include equipment purchases, technical assistance and training or funded initiatives such as drug and gang task forces, domestic violence programs, information sharing that aimed at reducing crime and/or enhancing public/officer safety. With these improved capabilities, the police department's will be better prepared to respond to current crime trends, resolve crimes and ensure public safety. This grant is awarded for a period of four (4) years, beginning October 1, 2019, through September 30, 2023. This award does not require any local match. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has been awarded a grant by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance ("Grantor") in the amount of $234,888.00 ("Grant"), with no required local match, to provide the Miami Police Department ("MPD") funding for criminal justice initiatives, technical assistance, training, equipment, and contractual support; and WHEREAS, the Grant will be used by MPD to support criminal justice initiatives that will expand and improve MPD's operations, as allowed by the grant agreement, to reduce crime, enhance officer safety, and provide better services to the City's residents, businesses, and visitors; and WHEREAS, the Grant is awarded for a period of four (4) years, beginning October 1, 2019 and ending September 30, 2023; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The following new Special Revenue Project is established and resources are appropriated as described below: FUND TITLE: BJA FY 20 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program RESOURCES: U.S. Department of Justice/Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance $234,888.00 APPROPRIATION: Support Criminal Justice Initiatives of the Department of Police $234,888.00 Section 3. The City Manager is authorized to execute the Grant Agreement, in substantially the attached form, with the Grantor. Section 4. The City Manager is further authorized' to designate the Chief of Police to execute any and all other necessary documents, all in forms acceptable to the City Attorney, for the acceptance of the Grant. Section 5. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City of Miami Commission.
