HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-20-0310City of Miami Resolution R-20-0310 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 7939 Final Action Date: 10/8/2020 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO OBJECTION AND SUPPORTING THE CO -DESIGNATION BY THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE, PURSUANT TO CHAPTER 2020-185, FOR THAT PORTION WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI'S LIMITS OF SOUTH DIXIE HIGHWAY/STATE ROAD ("SR") 5/UNITED STATES ROUTE 1 ("U.S. 1") FROM BROOKER STREET TO SR 9A/INTERSTATE 95 ("1-95") NORTHBOUND AS "HARRIET TUBMAN HIGHWAY", MIAMI, FLORIDA; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, Araminta "Minty" Ross, widely known as Harriet Ross Tubman ("Harriet Tubman"), was born enslaved in Dorchester County, Maryland around 1822; and WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman unapologetically proclaimed her right to liberty by successfully escaping the bonds of slavery and changed her name; and WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist and political activist who displayed selfless service by risking her life to return to slavery over thirteen (13) times during an eleven (11) year period to help countless others escape; and WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman helped to establish and mobilize the Underground Railroad comprised of a network of abolitionists and safe houses that provided enslaved individuals with a passage to freedom; and WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman was an American hero as she was the first documented woman to lead an armed assault during the Civil War where she also served as a nurse and intelligence operative for the Union Army and advocated for women's right to vote during the Women's Suffrage Movement; and WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913 surrounded by loved ones and was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") would like to honor the memory and legacy of Harriet Tubman by co -designating that portion of South Dixie Highway/United States Route 1 ("U.S.1") from Brooker Street to State Road ("SR") 9A/Interstate 95 ("1-95") Northbound as "Harriet Tubman Highway"; and WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, during its 2020 session, passed Chapter 2020-185, Laws of Florida, approving several transportation facility designations including a co -designation for Harriet Tubman Highway as well as a directive to the Department of Transportation to conduct a feasibility and impact study related to renaming those sections to be co -designated in honor of Harriet Tubman; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 7939 (Revision: A) Printed On: 5/12/2025 File ID: 7939 Enactment Number: R-20-0310 WHEREAS, the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners passed Resolution No. R-168-20 dated February 19, 2020 urging the Florida Legislature to rename that portion within the City's limits of South Dixie Highway/U.S. 1/SR 5 from the Miami-Dade/Monroe County Line to SR 9A/I-95 as "Harriet Tubman Highway"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission declares no objection and supports the co - designation by the State of Florida for that portion within the City's limits of South Dixie Highway/SR 5/U.S.1 from Brooker Street to SR 9A/I-95 Northbound as "Harriet Tubman Highway". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six Secretary for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
