WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving throughout the United States, including approximately 1,400 full-time sworn police officers in in the City of Miami ("City"); and WHEREAS, the officers of the City's Police Department ("MPD") have all bravely committed themselves to law enforcement and taken an oath to uphold the public's trust even though they, through the performance of the duties as law enforcement officers, may become targets for senseless acts of violence; and WHEREAS, MPD officers are charged with pursuing justice for all individuals and performing the various duties of law enforcement officers with fidelity to the constitutional and civil rights of the public they serve; and WHEREAS, the residents, visitors, and businesses of the City have turned to MPD officers for assistance and support in times of distress, whether they are coping with a personal crisis, victimization, or a natural disaster; and WHEREAS, MPD officers have bravely continued to meet the call of duty to ensure the security of the City at the risk of their own personal safety during the current COVID-19 pandemic; and WHEREAS, due to the nature of their duties coupled with the significant presence of COVID-19 infections in Miami -Dade County, MPD officers are dealing with especially challenging circumstances and are dealing with the potential of exposing their families every day when they return home; and WHEREAS, MPD officers deserve the appreciation and respect of the residents, visitors, and businesses in the City for the merit, dignity, bravery, and reliability they exhibit each and every day and simultaneously honor the sacrifices made by families of MPD officers, as each day they face some level of trepidation as their loved one works to protect the City; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby declares the week of July 12, 2020 through July 18, 2020 as "Miami Police Department Officers' Appreciation Week" ("Week") in the City in honor of MPD officers for the merit, dignity, bravery, and reliability they exhibit each and every day. Section 3. The City Manager is directed to observe the Week in the City by organizing any ceremonies and activities deemed appropriate. Section 4.
