A medida que el coronavi-
rus suma miles de muer-
tes en el mundo y arrecia
su impacto en EEUU, cre-
cen las dudes sobre el ori-
gen intenciunadu o no de
la pandemia china
Los rumores sobre una
posible conspiracidn del
gobierno de China para
desestabilizar las princi-
pales economies del pla-
neta y en especial la de
Estados Unidos, parecen
acercarse a to que seria el
posible comienzo de una
nueva era de "Guerra Fria".
De ser asi, las conse-
cuencias a nivel politico
y diplomatico desen-
cadenarian un caos, en
medio de la expectante
reaction del presidente
Donald Trump, ante una
presunta y abierta decla-
raci6n de guerra econ6-
mica del gigante asiatico
para obtener la supreme-
cia mundial.
A finales del ewe, las
tensiones sobre temas
economicos entre Este -
dos Unidos y China subie-
ron a un nivel inesperado
por las medidas de la Casa
Blanca contra las impor-
taciones chinas, litigio
que meses despues qued6
aparentemente resuelto
con un acuerdo entre
ambas partes.
El DepartamentodeJus-
ticia de EEUU anunci6, a
traves del Fiscal General
de Massachusetts, An-
drew Lelling, que el Jefe
del Departamento de
Quimica y Biologic Qui-
mica de la Universidad de
Harvard -junto a otros dos
ciudadanos chinos- fueron
acusados de ayudar al go-
bierno de la Republica Po-
pular de China.
Guerra en silencio
El Dr. Charles Lieber, de Go
aims, enfrenta cargos en
Boston, Massachusetts, por
hacer una declaraci&n false
y fraudulenta.
Yanqing Ye, de 29 anos,
ciudadana china, fue acu-
sada de fraude al solici-
tar su visa de entrada al
pais, hacer declaraciones
falsas y de actuar y cons-
pirer corno agente de un
gobierno extranjero.
Ye, indica el documento ju-
dicial, es teniente del Ejer-
cito Popular de Liberation
(EPL), las fuerzas armadas
de la Republica Popular de
China miembro del Partido
Comunista Chino. En su so-
licitud de visa J-1, Ye se iden-
tific i de manera falsa Como
una "estudiante" y minti6
sobre sus servicios en la Uni-
versidad Nacional de Tec-
nologia de Defense (NUDT),
una academia militar supe-
rior dirigida por el Partido
Comunista.
Se alega, edemas, que
mientras estudiaba en el
Departamento de Fisica,
Quimica e Ingenieria Bio-
medica de la Universidad
de Boston (desde octubre
del 2017 a abril del aot9), Ye
cumpli6 numerosas orien-
taciones de oficiales de in-
teligencia, como realizar
investigaciones, evaluar a
militares estadounidenses,
hackear sitios web relevan-
tes y envier informacibn cla-
sificada de EEUU a China.
Segun documentos lega-
les, el 20 de abril del 201e,
agentes federales inte-
rrogaron a Yanqing Ye en
Boston. Durante la entre-
vista, afirm6 que tenia un
contacto minimo con dos
profesores de NUDT, que
resultaron ser oficiales de
inteligencia de alto rango
del ejercito chino.
Contraband°
Por su parte, Zaosong
Zheng, de 3o afios, ciuda-
dano chino, fue arrestado
el to de diciembre del 2019
en el Aeropuerto Interna-
cional de Boston. Zheng in-
tentaba Reverse a China 21
formulas de investigation
biolegica. El 21 de enero de
este afio, fue acusado de un
cargo de contrabando de
bienes estadounidenses y
otro por hacer declaracio-
nes falsas y fraudulentas.
El texto judicial revels
que -desde el 2008- el
Dr. Lieber, recibi6 mas de
l5 millones en fondos de
subvention de los Insti-
tutos Nacionales de Salud
(NIH) y del Departamento
de Defense (DOD) de F.sta-
dos Unidos. Estas subven-
ciones exigen dar a conocer
cualquier action que re-
presente un conflicto de
interes financiero con con-
trapartes en otros paises,
incluido el apoyo directo
o indirecto a gobiernos
extranjeros.
El informe del Departa-
mento de Justicia indica
que sin el conocimiento de
la Universidad de Harvard,
a partir del 2011 Lieber se
convirtio en un "Cientifico
Estrategico" en la Universi-
dad Tecnolegica de Wuhan
(WUT) en China, donde co-
menz6 el brote del nuevo

extranjeros, que puedan
aportar su conocimiento y

La pandemia del siglo XXI el Covid-ig
Coronavirus: afroamericanos en el
lado debil de las estadisticas en EEUU
DIARIO LAS AMERICAS consulto con varios especialistas para crear un mapa de la situation
social y sanitaria de las comunidades donde viven la mayoria de las personas de raza negra
6RETHEL DELOADO
pGrethelDelgado_
Desde hace digs se puede
leer en las redes sociales
que las personas de la raza
negra son "inmunes" al
coronavirus, entre otras
teorias que, aunque son
descabelladas, se replican
con velocidad en internet.
La agencia de noticias
AFP ha dedicado un ar-
ticulo de fact check (ve-
rificaci6n de datos) para
dejar claro que por el mo-
menta no se ha demos -
trade que el color de la
piel determine una mayor
o menor susceptibilidad
ante el COV I D-19.
Otro rumor, que informa
sobre la resistencia o no al
COVID-1.9 de determina-
dosgrupossanguineos,fue
desmentido por el medio
argentino Chequeado, que
tambien se dedica a anali-
zar information dilundida
en internet.
En cuanto a los plan-
teamientos que suponen
que las personas de la
raza negra podrian ser
mas debiles ante el co-
ronavirus porque este
afecta a las vies respire-
torias, habria una expli-
cacion para ello, aunque
no exactamente relacio-
nada con el COVID-19.
Segue un estudio de
la Oficina del Centro de
Recursos de Salud pare
Minorias (OMH por sus
siglas en ingles) del De-
partamento de Salud y
Servicios Humanos de
EEUU (H HS), los afroame-
ricanos o personas de la
raza negra tenian casi
tres veces mas probabili-
dades de morir por cau-
ses relacionadas con el
asma en comparacion con
la poblacion blanca.
Ademas, la tasa de morta-
lidad de los afroamericanos
es generalmente mas alta
que la de los blancos por en-
fermedades como asma, in-
fluenza y neumonla, segue
apunta la OMH.
Vale destacar que abril es
el Mes National de la Salud
de las Minorias, oportuni-
dad en la que se llama la
atencion sobre las afeccio-
nes de salud que puedan
presenter comunidades
hispanas, afroamericanas y
asiat ices en EEUU.
Afroamerieanos
Ahora bien. aunque haya
una mayor incidencia de
enfermedades respire-
torias en estas personas,
haste ahora no hay datos
suficientes ni investigacio-
nes que prueben que los
afroamericanos son mas
debiles ante el COVID-19.
Kurt Schesser, Ph.D., pro-
fesor en el Departamento
de Microbiologia e Inmu-
nologia de Miller School of
Medicine, en la Universidad
de Miami. dijo a DIARIO
LAS AMERICAS que "hasty
donde se sabe, no hay dife-
rencias raciales en la sus-
ceptibilidad al COVID-19".
El Dr. Schesser dirige
(junto a sus colegas Arba
Ager y Natasa Strbo) Ia Uni-
dad de Investigation de En-
fermedades Tropicales de la
Universidad de Miami, que
se encarga principalmente
de evaluar terapias inmu-
nologicas y farmacol6gicas
pars combatir la malaria.
Por su parte. Dushyantha
T. Jayaweera MD, MRCOG
(UK), FACP, profesorde Me-
dicine en la Miller School
of Medicine, de UM, Indic)
que "no hay datos que res-
palden que las personas
de la raza negra corren un
mayor riesgo de infection
por COVID-tg. Sin em-
bargo, si tienen hiperten-
sibn, enfermedad cardiaca
o diabetes, el riesgo au-
menta. Pero, no es porque
sean de la raza negra".
Jayaweera es experto en
enfermedades infecciosas
y lidera numerosos ensa-
yos en colaboraci6n con
la Industrie de medica-
mentos para pacientes con
enfermedades virales, in-
cluidos el VIH / SIDA y la
hepatitis C (VHC). Ademas,
ha publicado mas de 5o ar-
ticulos de investigation.
Desventaja social
Si bien todos somos vul-
nerables al contagio del
COVID-19, las afroameri-
canos podrian ester en des-
ventaja debido a la position
social que ocupa una buena
parte de este poblacion, las
condiciones de vide y el ac-
ceso que tienen a los servi-
cios de salud.
Asi Io explica Connor
Maxwell, analista de poli-
ticas del equipo de Raza y
Etnia en el Center for Ame-
rican Progress. Maxwell se-
fiala que "una de cada seis
personas de la raza negra
no pudo ver a un medico
en 2018 debido al costa, y el
32% ha experimentado dis-
criminaci6n racial al it a un
medico o clinica de salud".
Para ayudarnos a com-
prender mejor estas des-
ventajas, el analista afirm6
que el coronavirus podria
ser especialmente peli-
groso en la comunidad
afroamericana o de la raza
negra por tres rezones.
"Primero, las politicas gu-
bernamentales segregaron
a millones de personas de
la raza negra en areas urba-
nas densamente pobladas
donde el distanciamiento
social es mas dllicil, to que
podria aumentar la exposi-
ci6n al coronavirus", deta-
il'!" el analista.
En Segundo lugar, "las
personas de la raze negra
son mucho mas propensas
que las personas blancas a
tener afecciones de salud
cronicas graves, como asma
y diabetes, porque estaban
sistematicamente restrin-
gidas a areas con emisio-
nes tbxicas de automoviles
e instalaciones industriales
y con menos acceso a tien-
das de alimentos saluda-
bles y asequibles".
Y por ultimo enfatizb que
"si las personas de la raza
negra contraen el corona -
virus, los obstaculos finan-
cieros y la discrimination
podrian evitar que reciban
la atencion que necesitan".
Maxwell dej6 claro que
"cualquier persona de cual-
quier raza puede contraer
el virus, enfermarse gra-
vemente e incluso morir a
causa de el". Segue declare,
el problema radica en que
"las politicas gubernamen-
tales y las practices insti-
tucionales han expuesto a
las comunidades negras a
altos niveles de emisiones
t6xicas y desechos peligra-
sos que aumentan el riesgo
de desarrollar afecciones
subyacentes. comp el asma
y Ia enfermedad pulmonar
obstructive cronica" •
