HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-20-0065City of Miami Resolution R-20-0065 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 7252 Final Action Date: 2/24/2020 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BY A FOUR -FIFTHS (4/5THS) AFFIRMATIVE VOTE, CO -DESIGNATING NORTHEAST 7TH STREET FROM BISCAYNE BOULEVARD TO NORTHEAST 2ND AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "DWYANE WADE BOULEVARD" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Mayor Francis X. Suarez WHEREAS, Dwyane "DWade" Tyrone Wade, Jr. ("Wade") was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1982; and WHEREAS, Wade was drafted in the overall National Basketball Association ("NBA") draft by the Miami Heat in 2003 and played fourteen (14) seasons with the Miami Heat; and WHEREAS, Wade founded The Wade's World Foundation which provides support to community -based organizations that promote education, health, and social skills for children in at -risk situations in both Chicago and South Florida; and WHEREAS, in his third season, Wade led the Miami Heat to its first NBA Championship in franchise history and was named the 2006 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player; and WHEREAS, Wade led the United States Men's Basketball Team in scoring during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and help the team obtain a gold medal; and WHEREAS, Wade assisted in helping the Miami Heat win back-to-back NBA Championships in 2012 and 2013; and WHEREAS, Wade finished his playing career with the Miami Heat in 2018; and WHEREAS, Wade was honored in 2020 when the Miami Heat raised his No. 3 jersey to the rafters and retired his jersey at the American Airlines Arena; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami would like to honor Wade by co -designating that portion of Northeast 7th Street from Biscayne Boulevard to Northeast 2nd Avenue as "Dwyane Wade Boulevard"; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code"), the City Commission hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature; City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 7252 (Revision:) Printed On: 4/29/2025 File ID: 7252 Enactment Number: R-20-0065 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Northeast 7th Street from Biscayne Boulevard to Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida is hereby co -designated, by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commission, as "Dwyane Wade Boulevard" pursuant to Section 54-137 of the City Code. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
