HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-20-0016City of Miami Resolution R-20-0016 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 7116 Final Action Date: 1/23/2020 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE CITY ATTORNEY AS NECESSARY, TO CONTACT, CORRESPOND, AND MEET WITH APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ("FDOT") IN ORDER FOR FDOT TO REVIEW, INVESTIGATE, AND ANALYZE SAFETY MEASURES NEEDED ON SOUTHWEST 8 STREET (ALSO KNOWN AS "CALLE OCHO" AND "TAMIAMI TRAIL") BETWEEN SOUTHWEST 42 AVENUE (ALSO KNOWN AS "LEJEUNE ROAD") AND SOUTHWEST 57 AVENUE (ALSO KNOWN AS "RED ROAD"); FINDING THAT THIS RESOLUTION IS OF AN EMERGENCY NATURE DUE TO PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS INVOLVING PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES AND ACCIDENTS OCCURRING ON THIS PORTION OF SOUTHWEST 8 STREET. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, Southwest 8 Street, also known as "Calle Ocho" and "Tamiami Trail", is a historic and renowned State Road traversing a large portion of the City of Miami ("City") from east to west; and WHEREAS, State Roads such as Southwest 8 Street under the State Highway System are managed and maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT"); and WHEREAS, Southwest 8 Street is a highly transited and active street, which has many pedestrian and motorists concurrently using it; and WHEREAS, the portion of Southwest 8 Street between Southwest 42 Avenue ("Le Jeune Road") on the east and Southwest 57 Avenue ("Red Road") on the west has only three (3) traffic lights despite certain intersections and does not have any illuminated or flashing warning pedestrian crossings; and WHEREAS, the foregoing area of Southwest 8 Street has suffered a recent traffic accident with a pedestrian fatality and various other traffic accidents involving personal injuries to motorists and pedestrians and/or damage to property; and WHEREAS, the City Manager, with the assistance of the City Attorney as necessary, is directed to contact the appropriate FDOT officials and representatives to encourage, prompt, and cooperate with them in this FDOT undertaking; and WHEREAS, the City Clerk is instructed to mail certified copies of this Resolution to FDOT Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, FDOT District Six Secretary (Miami) James Wolfe, Miami - Dade County Commissioners Xavier Suarez and Rebeca Sosa, and Coral Gables Mayor Raul Valdes-Fauli of Coral Gables; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 7116 (Revision:) Printed On: 4/29/2025 File ID: 7116 Enactment Number: R-20-0016 WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Manager, with the assistance of the City Attorney as necessary, is directed to contact, correspond with, and meet with appropriate FDOT officials and representatives, including District Six Secretary Jim Wolfe, in order to prompt, encourage, and cooperate with FDOT in order for FDOT to review, investigate, and analyze safety measures to be considered for implementation in the area of Southwest 8 Street between Le Jeune Road and Red Road. Section 3. The City Clerk is instructed to mail official copies of this Resolution to FDOT Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, FDOT District Six Secretary (Miami) James Wolfe, Miami -Dade County Commissioners Xavier Suarez and Rebeca Sosa, and Coral Gables Mayor Raul Valdes- Fauli. Section 4.
