PUERTO RICO Puerto Rico is slightly ore likely to be hit with an earthquake of magni- tude 6.0 or higher over the next week, the U.S. Ge- ological Survey said, after an intense aftershock Sat- urday led the agency to tweak its statistical models. In an "Aftershock Fore- cast" updated Sunday, the USGS said the chance of a magnitude 6.0 earthquake or higher was 11%— up from 7% a week ago. How- er, the chance of a mag- nitude 7.0 earthquake remained at just 1%. "Such an earthquake is possible but with low prob- ability," the USGS said. Puerto Rico's southern coast has been ratted by a series of quakes since Dec. 28 and was hit by the ainshock," a magnitude 6.4, on Tuesday. Since then aftershocks, most of them barely perceptible, have been part of daily life on the island. On Saturday, however, a 5.9 magnitude quake caused fresh damage and renewed panic. "No one can predict the exact time or place of an earthquake, including aftershocks," the USGS cautioned. "Our forecast changes as time passes due to decline in frequency of aftershocks, larger after- shocks that may trigger furtherearthquakes, and changes in forecast model- ing based on data collected for this earthquake se- quence." The USGS also produces 30-day "scenarios," that also suggest that a larger earthquake is unlikely. That month -long predic- tion remains unchanged. In remarks to members of the small town of La Mom, which was shattered by the Nov. 4 killings of three women and six children from the extended Lang- ford LeBaron and Miller families, Lopez Obrador said the fast goal is to bring those responsible to justice. Speaking after meeting with victims' relatives, the president said an agreement had been reached with municipal and Sonora state officials to establish a mon- ument of some sort "here where these lamentable and painful events took place, and alsm for special recog- nition of those who risked then lives to rush to the aid of victims and survivors. "So that we exalt this, the we solidarity: He who a wilting to give his fife for anther," Lopez Obrador said. The mostly bilingual American -Mexicans have lived in northern Mexico for decades and consider them- selves Morons, though they are not affiliated with The Church of inns Christ of Latter-day Saints. The community's origins in Mexico date to the offi- cial end of polygamy over a century ago by the LDS church, which prompted many families that contin- ued the practice to establish colonies elsewhere. Many of those in northern Mexico have by now, over the gen- erations, abandoned polyga- my as well. 1a Mora is a haMet of about 300 people in Sonora state while Colonia LeBaron is a larger town of over 2,000 on the other side of the mountains in Chihua- hua; the two are biked by a bone -jarring and treach- erous dirt road where the attack occurred as the pro - men and children were traveling to visit relatives. The killings sowed grief and fear in the tightly knit communities, and dozens fled La Mora for the United States in the subsequent days out of concerns for their safety. What was once a tranquil and even idyllic life in a fertile river valley surtamded by mountains and desert scrub had grown increasingly tenuous as crmtinal gangs exerted their influence and fought each other, some said. "Broken hearts, defeated, and through the fault of aline. 1 personally do not understand how so many people continue t0 die in h a beautiful country, such good people and with such richness, unity member Margaret Langford said at Saturday's ceremo- ny.
