A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM
THE DISTRICT 4 DISCRETIONARY ACCOUNT IN THE AMOUNT OF ONE
THOUSAND DOLLARS ($1,000.00) TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, A
FEDERAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND A STATE OF FLORIDA NOT -FOR -
PROFIT CORPORATION ("ACS"), IN SUPPORT OF ACS' MAKING STRIDES
AGAINST BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN.
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society's ("ACS") Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer campaign and walks (collectively, "Making Stride's Campaign") began in 1993 and has
quickly become one of the largest networks of breast cancer research, education, advocacy,
patient services, and prevention events in the nation; and
WHEREAS, to date, the ACS' Making Strides Campaign has raised approximately $935
million for breast cancer programs and provided breast cancer research grants nationwide
totaling $64 million; and
WHEREAS, according to the ACS' statistics and its historical research, nationally, breast
cancer will strike more than 266,000 times this year and claim more than 40,920 lives, and in
the State of Florida ("Florida"), over 18,100 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and
over 2,710 will die from the disease; however, breast cancer death rates have decreased by
forty percent (40%) since 1989, translating to more than 348,300 lives saved from breast
cancer; and
WHEREAS, funding raised by the ACS' Making Strides Campaign is restricted to breast
cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services for people in every community
affected by breast cancer, whether they are currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in
the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction efforts; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 26, 2019, the 21 st Anniversary of ACS' Making Strides
Campaign walk in Miami will be held at Marlins Baseball Park; and
WHEREAS, in support of the upcoming 21 st Anniversary event for ACS' Making Strides
Campaign, the District 4 Commissioner would like to donate funding in the amount of one
thousand dollars ($1000.00) from the District 4 Discretionary Account to the Making Strides
Campaign;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The allocation of funds from the District 4 Discretionary Account in the amount of
one thousand dollars ($1,000.00), to the ACS in support of its Making Strides Campaign is
authorized.'
Section 3. The City Manager is authorized' to negotiate and execute any and all necessary
documents, all in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, for the purposes stated herein.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.2

1 The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by
the City Attorney, including but not limited to, those prescribed by applicable City Charter and City Code
provisions.
2 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
