Subject: FW: Traffic Calming on SW 16th Avenue between SW 22nd Street and US 1
Good Afternoon Mrs. Matlins-Gordon,
In response to your request for traffic calming at SW 16th Avenue between SW 22nd Street and US 1,
the City of Miami's Office of Capital Improvements staff conducted a study to evaluate existing traffic
conditions and assess the need for traffic calming devices along the subject road segment. Traffic
volume and speed data was collected for a recent twenty-four (24) hour period and is summarized
below.

In order to consider the implementation of traffic calming measures, the location must meet certain
minimum criteria established by Miami -Dade County DTPW. Among them, the daily volume, which is the
best indicator of livability along a roadway, must be at least 1,050 vehicles per day. Based on the 2,082
vehicles per day observed, the subject location meets this criteria. Additionally, there is a 46 percent (%)
difference in the direction of traffic, exceeding the minimum requirement of 25 percent (%). With eight
(8) crashes in the most recent (3) years of data, the crash history of the location does not meet the
minimum of three (3) crashes per year established by the Miami -Dade DTPW criteria, Lastly, with a posted
speed limit of 30 mph and an 85' percentile speed of 28.0 mph, the criteria that the 85' percentile speed
must be over 10 mph the posted speed limit is not met.
The Miami -Dade County DTPW requires that both the volume threshold and one (1) additional criteria be
met for the location to be deemed eligible for traffic calming devices. Based on the volume of 2,082
vehicles per day and the 46 percent (%) difference in direction of traffic during the peak hour, the location
SW 16th Avenue between SW 22nd Street and US 1 is eligible for traffic calming devices per the Miami -
Dade County DTPW criteria.
