Born in Newnansville, Florida. in 1875,. Dr. John Gordon DaPuis moved to Lemon City after graduating from medical school at the University of Kentucky in 1898. He began his practice in a one -room frame building behind the Conoliy Hotel. The building served a DuPuis• office and as one of the first draq stores in soUth Florida. DuPufs was involved in larger Dade County medical at fairs. including helping during a yellow fever outbreak in 1899. He worked with the local Seminoles in the early 19005. who regarded him as a white medicine man In 1902, DUPuis had a new office built on the corner of Lemon Avenue (NE 61st St.) and Rock Road (NE 2nd Ave.). It was the first concrete building constructed north of downtown Miami. It housed DUPuis office and drugstore on the first floor. and his family residence on the second. The building is an excellent example of a late I9th-early 20th century commercial structure and is one of the few examples of its type to survive in Miami. City Clerk In addition to meeting with representatives from a wide range of community organizations, the Applicant has engaged in a highly collaborative development process with the residents and businesses of Little Haiti and adjacent communities. • On August 18, 2017, the Applicant hosted a community open house at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, followed by a bus tour of the SAP area. Over 100 people were invited and 30+ attended. • Between September & November 2017, the Applicant team held 26 one-on-one meetings with community leaders, stakeholders, homeowners, property owners, and business owners. • Between December 4-10, 2017, the Applicant hosted an on -site Caribbean themed art show during Art Basel that showcased local Haitian and Caribbean artists. • On December 12, 2017, the Applicant hosted a on -site community open house. In order to give the community and interested participants a wide -range of time to attend, the event took place from 3:00-8:00 PM. Over 200 individuals were invited and 60+ attended. • From January 23-25, 2018, the Applicant took members of the Little Haiti community to visit Le Complexe-de-la- Maison-Alcan located in downtown Montreal in order to show community leaders a real life example of the Magic City Innovation District's potential. MINI( CITY - INNOVATION DISTRICT COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS Community outreach timeline continued: • On January 30, 2018, the Applicant hosted a community open house at the Magic City Warehouse. City Clerk • Between February — April 2018, the Applicant team conducted extensive door-to-door canvassing of businesses along NE 2nd Avenue between NE 54th and NE 62nd Streets. • On June 4, 2018, the Applicant hosted an on -site community open house in the SAP area. The event took place from 5:00-8:00 PM. Over 400 people were invited and 100+ attended. • From June 11-13, 2018, the Applicant took members of the Little Haiti community to visit Le Complexe-de-la- Maison-Alcan located in downtown Montreal. The purpose of the trip was to show community leaders a real life example of the Magic City Innovation District's potential. • On September 24, 2018 and both November 13 & 14, 2018, the Applicant met with a small working group of community stakeholders to discuss the project and listen to their requests. • Overall, the Applicant has been committed to a robust dialogue with the community and with local organizations about the Magic City Innovation District SAP to ensure that the proposed SAP master plan embraces the rich culture that has been thriving in Little Haiti for decades and that the proposed development helps to improve the quality of life for residents in the surrounding neighborhood and throughout the City of Miami.
