Re: Magic City District
Good evening. My husband and I have been running our business in the food
industry in the Little River Business District since 1985, and this is our 40th year in
business in Miami. I provide this background so that you all have a better
understanding of why WE SUPPORT THIS SPECIAL AREA PLAN, BUT WE FEEL THIS
APPLICATION SHOULD BE CONTINUED AND IS NOT READY FOR APPROVAL.
We support this Special Area Plan because, as stated on
www.magiccitydistrict.com, an economic impact study was completed which
determined that: more than 9,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs will be
created; and about 900 annual short-term construction jobs will be needed!
This economic impact study also stated that the Innovation District will be
stimulating the local economy, and generating huge increases in marginal
property tax and sales tax revenue annually. So unless the Magic City District
website and this economic impact study are full of exaggerations and lies, I
believe that Little River, Little Haiti, and Lemon City will highly benefit
economically from their proposal.
However, we feel that this application needs to be continued and not approved
yet tonight. The Magic City team needs to address the area's concerns, including
that: the residents in the surrounding neighborhoods fear excessive loud music
from middle -of -the night events (attracting 2,000 party -goers possibly every
week); the area's businesses fear parking congestion (and tractor trailers need
sufficient turning radius); and fifteen liquor licenses with 5:00 AM closings will
generate more crime and more debris (soiling the reputation of Little Haiti, Little
River, and Lemon City as a positive area in which to live, work, play, and learn.)
We feel that the Magic City team should take more time to overcome these
concerns, so that the overwhelmingly positive contributions the Innovation
District will bring to the area are not overshadowed by the negative issues.
