HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-18-0345City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-18-0345 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 4242 Final Action Date: 7/26/2018 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT AND THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO MAKE FUNDING AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT THE FORMULA 1 MIAMI GRAND PRIX; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO MAKE THE FINDING OF AVAILABLE STATE FUNDING A LEGISLATIVE PRIORITY; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS NAMED HEREIN. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Joe Carollo WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is currently negotiating with Formula One World Championship Limited ("Formula One") and South Florida Racing, LLC., ("Racing") to bring Formula 1 Grand Prix Championship racing to Miami for ten (10) years starting in 2019; and WHEREAS, Formula One has over 500 million fans globally, with twenty-one (21) races on five (5) continents each year; and WHEREAS, in 2017, there were over 1.8 billion cumulative viewers of the Formula One series races; and WHEREAS, the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix race will bring thousands of race fans to South Florida, which, for international tourists, can easily become part of a much larger visit to the rest of Florida and its great attractions, from the West Coast to the Space Coast, to the Panhandle and all points in between; and WHEREAS, millions of international viewers will see the City and the greater South Florida area for four (4) straight days of race events, leading up to the final race; and WHEREAS, this type of international exposure every year, for ten (10) years, is equivalent to Super Bowl viewership, which had 103 million viewers in 2018; and WHEREAS, the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix can only help to enhance the international destination status of the State of Florida as a whole through participation in this global event; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Legislature to make funding available to support the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to make the finding of available state funding a legislative priority. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Rick Scott and the Members of the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.
