City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-18-0153 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 3905 Final Action Date:4/12/2018 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF A POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIP WITH MIAMI DADE COLLEGE ("MDC") AND ANY AND ALL OTHER ENTITIES FOR THE OPERATION OF THE OLYMPIA THEATER ("THEATER") IN A MANNER THAT PRESERVES THE THEATER, MAKES IT MORE FINANCIALLY SOUND, AND INCLUDES HOUSING OPTIONS FOR MDC STUDENTS; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS NAMED HEREIN. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is the fee simple titleholder of the Property located at 174 East Flagler Street, Miami, Florida, known as the Olympia Theater ("Theater"); and WHEREAS, affordable and workforce housing remains a top priority for the City and the City Commission remains diligent in exploring every possible option for the benefit of its residents; and WHEREAS, the local student population, including Miami Dade College ("MDC") students, are particularly affected by the existing affordable housing shortage; and WHEREAS, MDC has successfully managed popular civic and cultural programing and operations of other historic assets, including the Koubek Center in the Coral Way neighborhood, the Freedom Tower in downtown Miami, and the City -owned Tower Theater in Little Havana; and WHEREAS, the City Commission would like to explore the possibility of a partnership with MDC for the operation of the Theater including housing options for MDC students; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Ordinance No. 9643, adopted on June 15, 1983, the Theater was designated a historic property in the City and is worthy of comprehensive preservation; and WHEREAS, as part of the partnership, the City would support a capital investment in the physical structure of the Theater to bring it up to acceptable standards before a final agreement with MDC is reached; and WHEREAS, as a result of the potential partnership, MDC would be responsible for exploring year-round cultural activities and performances at the Theater for the benefit of the community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Manager is hereby directed to explore the feasibility of a potential partnership with MDC and any and all other entities for the operation of the Theater in a manner that preserves the Theater, makes it more financially sound, and inclusive of housing options for MDC students. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the President of MDC and the MDC Board of Trustees. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
