A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 20TH STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 19TH AVENUE TO
SOUTHWEST 22ND AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "JULIO OSCAR
MECHOSO STREET"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICES.
SPONSOR(S): Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Commissioner Manolo Reyes
WHEREAS, Julio Oscar Mechoso ("Mechoso") was a Cuban American actor born on
May 31, 1955 in Matanzas, Cuba and passed away on November 25, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso was raised in the Shenandoah area around Southwest 12th
Avenue and 16th Street, Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso attended Shenandoah Junior High School, Coral Gables High
School, Miami -Dade Community College (South Campus), and finally Florida International
University where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in psychology; and
WHERAS, Mechoso's parents owned Mechoso Appliances and Furniture Store on SW
8th Street for many years, which contributed to the beginnings of Calle Ocho; and
WHEREAS, while studying psychology at Miami -Dade Community College, Mechoso
met Andy Garcia and both became very interested careers in acting; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso initially landed roles in e:,Que Pasa, U.S.A.? and Miami Vice and
later went to Hollywood where he acted in more than one hundred fifteen (115) movies, many
with Andy Garcia; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso starred in films such as Internal Affairs, The Lost City, The Legend
of Zorro, Little Miss Sunshine, The Forger, Jurassic Park III, and Bad Boys; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso was a tremendously accomplished "working actor" who usually
played smaller but very memorable roles; and
WHEREAS, Mechoso is remembered by many who knew him as a wonderful person
with a terrific personality and lots of charisma and a great friend that was loved by everyone;
and
WHEREAS, Mechoso will always be remembered in the City of Miami ("City") for his
contributions to the community and film industry; and

WHEREAS, the co -designation of Southwest 20th Street from Southwest 19t" Avenue to
Southwest 22nd Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Julio Oscar Mechoso Street" appropriately
commemorates Mechoso's life;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Southwest 20th Street from
Southwest 19th Avenue to Southwest 22nd Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Julio Oscar Mechoso
Street."
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the
newly designated roadways.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'

1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
