RAYMOND OF PEIVAFORT STREET"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, St. Raymond of Penafort ("St. Raymond") was a Dominican friar from the 13th century that is now known as the patron saint of lawyers; and WHEREAS, St. Raymond was born in Barcelona and descended from a noble family with ties to the royal house of Aragon; and WHEREAS, St. Raymond was a scholar, having received doctorates in civil and canon law, served as a schoolteacher before becoming a friar, and was instrumental in compiling the Decreta/s of Gregory IX, which became the standard for canon law for 700 years; and WHEREAS, St. Raymond served as the official confessor for King James I, and while on a mission trip with the King to the island of Mallorca, denounced the King for some actions and requested return passage to Barcelona, which request the King denied and condemned any ship captain that provided St. Raymond safe passage; and WHEREAS, in response, St. Raymond took off his cloak, laid it on the water, tied it to his walking staff, and sailed off, reaching Barcelona in just six (6) hours, a miracle witnessed by many sailors and crowds of spectators, which caused King James I to denounce his immoral desires and lead a good life; and WHEREAS, St. Raymond was canonized by Pope Clement VIII in 1601; and WHEREAS, in his memory, St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church ("Church") was founded in Miami, Florida in May 1969 and has been a source of community service to the residents of the City of Miami ("City"); and WHEREAS, to commemorate the Church's contributions and charitable services to the City, it is requested that Southwest 17th Street from Southwest 37th Avenue to Coral Gate Drive, Miami, Florida be co -designated as "St. Raymond of Penafort Street"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Southwest 17th Street from Southwest 37th Avenue to Coral Gate Drive, Miami, Florida as "St. Raymond of Penafort Street." Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Departments of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
