A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BY A FOUR -FIFTHS
(4/5THS) AFFIRMATIVE VOTE, PURSUANT TO THE CRITERIA SET FORTH
IN SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS
AMENDED, ENTITLED "STREET CODESIGNATION," CODESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 50TH STREET FROM NORTHWEST 12TH AVENUE TO
NORTHWEST 17TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "MRS. NANCY S.
DAWKINS WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A
COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES.
SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Keon Hardemon
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins has been a resident of the City of Miami for seventy
(70) years and a retired thirty-five (35) year educator from schools such as Liberty City
Elementary, Holmes Elementary, Charles R. Drew Elementary, Poinciana Park, Orchard Villa
and Booker T. Washington High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins is the founding member and President Emeritus of
the Northwest Miami Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons #4686 and a
Board Member of the Hadley Park/Buena Vista West Homeowners Association; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins is a Charter member of the South Florida Business
and Professional Women's Club, the American Association of University Women (Tamiami
Branch), National Council of Negro Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the founder
of the Theodore Gibson Oratorical Contest; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins has been a community activist in the Liberty City
Area and has played an instrumental role in building the Carrie P. Meek Senior Center at
Hadley Park; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins is the widow of former Miami City Commissioner,
Miller Dawkins;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. By a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote, pursuant to the criteria set forth in
Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, entitled "Street
Codesignation," Northwest 50th Street from Northwest 12th Avenue to Northwest 17th Avenue,
Miami, Florida, is codesignated as "Mrs. Nancy S. Dawkins Way."

Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the City of
Miami Police Department, the Fire -Rescue Department, Solid Waste Department, Miami -Dade
County Department of Transportation and Public Works, and the United States Postal Service.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.

1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
