A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION FORMALIZING THE
OATH OF OFFICE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, ADMINISTERED TO ALL
INCUMBENT AND NEWLY ELECTED AND APPOINTED PUBLIC OFFICIALS,
BY ADDING AN OATH OF CIVILITY; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE MIAMI-DADE
COMMISSION ON ETHICS AND PUBLIC TRUST.

WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is dedicated to promoting civility when conducting
City business, during public and political discourse, and in personal interactions among those
who engage in public service and the constituents they serve and represent; and
WHEREAS, a lack of civility threatens the integrity, trust, and proper functioning of the
City and its officials; and
WHEREAS, on January 11, 2017, the Miami -Dade Commission on Ethics and Public
Trust adopted a resolution recommending that Miami -Dade County ("County") and every
municipality within the County amend the oaths of office administered to all elected and
appointed public officials by adding an oath of civility; and
WHEREAS, the oath of office presently administered to the City's elected and appointed
public officials reads as follows:
"I, (name), do solemnly swear that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution
and Laws of the United States of America, and of the State of Florida, and the Charter of the
City of Miami, and in all respects, faithfully discharge the duties of (title of office) of the City of
Miami, Miami -Dade County, Florida."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby formalizes the oath of office of the City,
administered to all incumbent and newly elected and appointed public officials, by adding an
oath of civility and the oath shall read as follows:
"I, (name), do solemnly swear that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution
and Laws of the United States of America, and of the State of Florida, and the Charter of the
City of Miami, and in all respects, faithfully discharge the duties of (title of office) of the City of
Miami, Miami -Dade County, Florida. To my colleagues and to all of those I represent and serve,

I pledge fairness, integrity, and civility in all actions taken and all communications made by me
as a public servant."
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Miami -Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'

1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
