HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-17-0236City of Miami Resolution R-17-0236 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 2082 Final Action Date: 5/11/2017 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING NORTHWEST 9TH STREET FROM NORTHWEST 40TH AVENUE TO NORTHWEST 42ND AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "OFFICER JORGE SANCHEZ STREET"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Francis Suarez, Commissioner Wifredo (Willy) Gort WHEREAS, Jorge Sanchez ("Sanchez") began his career with the City of Miami's Police Department ("MPD") in January 1995; and WHEREAS, Sanchez worked in many specialized units, including but not limited to the Gang Unit, the Missing Persons Unit, the Allapattah Problem Solving Team, the Traffic Enforcement Unit, and the Investigations Division; and WHEREAS, Sanchez often conveyed to others how proud he was to be a Motorcycle Officer and how he enjoyed working with the other members of the Motorcycle Unit in which he was a part of for the last ten (10) years of his career; and WHEREAS, Sanchez was tragically killed in an on duty motorcycle accident on November 1, 2016; and WHEREAS, Sanchez is survived by his mother, Maria, his former wife, Regla, his fiancee, Evelyn, and his three (3) children, Elizabeth, Jorge, and Officer Eric Sanchez, who followed in his father's footsteps and became a MPD Officer; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Northwest 9th Street from Northwest 40th Avenue to Northwest 42nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, is hereby codesignated as "Officer Jorge Sanchez Street." Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: 1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
