Dear Mayor Rega|adn:
Common Threads isrequesting $10/J00tmdeliver our proven cooking and nutrition education, along
with heaithy food, to more than 300 children aind adults in the City ofMiami. VVewill teach these
inclividuals the practical ski'lls needed to cook and eat for optimum nutrition on a budget, thereby
creating a strong foundation for not only individual personal health, but also for success in the
classroom and inlife,
Specifically, with $10,000 of support, Common Threads will partner with the Lotus Hnuse and Frederick
R, Douglass and Eneida M. Hartner elementary schools in the City of Miami to implement 13 sessions of
our cooking and nutrition education programs, including: our Small Bites nutrition education, Parent
Workshops, Grocery Store Tours, and our afterschool Cooking Skills and World Cuisine program.
In total, we will provide 2,290 hours of hands-on education and 2,275 n,utritious meals and snacks to

These children and adults will: learn the importance of and what constitutes a healthy diet; gain the
cooking skiHs and recipes to make healthy, affordable meals and snacks for theirfamily and themselves;
strengthen their social and emotional skills, including communication, teamwork, and decision -making,
by creating recipes with their families and peers; and improve their math, language arts, and science
skills byconnecting these concepts to cooking and nutrition. Based on past evaluation results, we
anticipate that the City of Miami children who participate in our programs will improve their vegetable
consumption and preference, cooking confidence, nutrition knowledge, frequency of cooking at home,
and communication with their family about healthy eating.
Thus, overalI, through our cooking and nutrition education, we will empower more than 300 children
and fanmiUes in the City ofMiami toadopt and maintain healthy eating habits that support their physical,
economic, social, and emotional' weU'being.
