Year Up's Mission and Vision
The mission of Year Up is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the
skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional
careers and higher education. We achieve this mission through a high support, high expectation
model that combines marketable job skills, stipends, internships and college credits. Our holistic ap-
proach focuses on students' professional and personal development to place these young adults on a
viable path to economic self-sufficiency. It fuels our vision to ensure that 'In the future, every urban
young adult will have access to the education, experiences, and guidance required to realize his or
her true potential."
About Year Up
Year Up South Florida is a one-year high expectation, high support program for 18-24 year old young
adults. We endeavor to create higher education and career pathways for our participants, many of
whom have lacked access to the resources that would place them on the traditional "college -to -
career" trajectory.
The first half of Year Up's program is the Learning and Development phase, during which students re-
ceive classroom instruction and develop marketable skills in a high -growth career field, such as Busi-
ness and Financial Operations and Sales; and Information and Technology and Programming. During
the second half of the year -long program, students participate in a five to six month practical learning
experience where they apply their learning at one of Year Up's business partner organizations; and
within four months of completion, go on to obtain a college degree and/or a liveable wage, profes-
sional position. Our curriculum is market -driven and career tracks are determined in response to the
needs of employer partners in our local region. In addition to
these hard skills, we train our students in the professional soft
skills required to perform in today's workplace. Students earn
college credits throughout the entire year, gain experience in
business writing, critical thinking, time management, workplace
norms, and many other key work and life skills.
