We want to first express our appreciation for your continuous support each
year to our AmeriCorps members that each year provide over 30,000 hours
of community service to our seniors in Miami -Dade County. These
AmeriCorps members are stipend volunteers that commit one year to
provide 450 hours of in home respite services to assist families caring for a
disabled veteran or individuals with Alzheimer's. Your attendance at our
annual graduation ceremony provides these AmeriCorps members
encouragement and recognition of their contribution to keeping the
individuals served out of a nursing home and in their homes surrounded by
their loved ones. Each year at a minimum sixty families receive this benefit.
The mission of Easter Seals is to change the way the world defines and
views disability by making profound, positive differences in people's lives
every day. The in home respite program seeks to delay or prevent nursing
home placement of disabled veteran or individuals with Alzheimer's by
providing relief to family caregivers.
Frail seniors and people with dementia are unable to function without
supervision. Family caregivers provide most of the care. They are also
more likely to report being in poor health and those caring for someone with
dementia report providing more care. Research has also indicated that 40%
of caregivers die before the person they are caring for and that caregiver
burnout results in more premature institutionalization than medical
conditions. The department of Elder Affairs has reported that less than 1°/0
of the demand for respite is being met. The bottom line is that caregivers

who receive assistance to maintain their own health will be less likely to die
prematurely or need long-term care themselves.
The cost of care per year of one individual in a nursing home is at a
minimum $73.000.
Due to the impact that respite services has in the quality of life of family
caregivers and their ability to continue to provide care, we want to increase
the number of individuals who can receive this service. To accomplish this
goal, we are requesting S10,000 to assist in the recruitment and support of
additional AmeriCorps members. These additional members will provide
2,000 hours of in home respite services and help five individuals and their
families together in their own home. Services will be available seven days a
week on a regular or sporadic basis.
The AmeriCorps member will provide each family with a minimum of 8
hours of in home respite per week for 52 weeks. All visits are documented
by the AmeriCorps members and certified by the family caregivers. The
AmeriCorps members are recruited from the local community, rigorously
screened for eligibility and receive pre -service trainings including CPR and
Alzheimer's certifications as well as monthly trainings. These volunteers
receive 20 hours of preservice training and four hours of These AmeriCorps
members supervise the care recipient, provide companionship and assist
with activities of daily living, thereby giving the caregiver a break from the
24/7 strain of caregiving. Their presence connects the family to the wider
community. They are charged with bringing information to these
homebound caregivers about community resources in support of their
caregiving efforts.
As part of this service each family receives a comprehensive evaluation,
support and case management services from a social worker. The social
