A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO TAKE ALL ACTION TO HAVE THE CITY OF MIAMI JOIN AS A
MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN FLOOD COALITION, A 501(C)(4) NON-PROFIT
ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO ADVOCACY AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL FOR
COASTAL CITIES ADDRESSING FLOODING AND ISSUES RELATED TO SEA
LEVEL RISE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is committed to addressing sea level rise and
accompanying flooding that threatens the quality of life of residents and visitors to the City; and
WHEREAS, the American Flood Coalition ("AFC"), formerly known as the Seawall
Coalition, is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization dedicated to advocacy that urges the federal
government to pay attention to, and provide coastal cities with, necessary policy changes,
funds, and incentives to address flooding and sea level rise; and
WHEREAS, the AFC has nearly 100 members, including 26 Florida municipalities; and
WHEREAS, the current Florida members are Coral Gables, St. Petersburg, St.
Augustine, Ft. Lauderdale, Surfside, Pompano Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, South Miami, Delray
Beach, Cutler Bay, Port Orange, Key Biscayne, Boca Raton, Hillsboro Beach, Aventura, Key
West, Lauderdale -By -The -Sea, Hollywood, Highland Beach, Miami Shores, Miami Lakes, Coral
Springs, Cocoa Beach, Punta Gorda, St. Augustine Beach, Boynton Beach and Venice; and
WHEREAS, joining the AFC is without cost to the City; and
WHEREAS, the City's membership will allow the AFC to better advocate for a national
policy to improve infrastructure and resilience for coastal communities, including ensuring
adequate federal and state resources needed to adapt to the challenge of sea level rise.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. Recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission authorizes the City Manager to take all action to have
the City join as a member of the AFC.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'
1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
