Type: Resolution
Subject: Install and Operate - Parklets in City Maintained Roadways
Purpose of Item:
A Resolution of the Miami City Commission, with attachments, authorizing the City
Manager to establish a Pilot Program for construction, installation and operation of
Parklets within the City of Miami maintained roadways.
Background of Item:
Parklets are semi -permanent decks that expand the pedestrian realm beyond the
sidewalk into a parking lane, allowing adjacent business owners to provide outdoor
seating, without the need for permanent street re -design and construction. Parklet areas
may include elements such as tables and chairs with or without food and beverage
service, planters, and other associated improvements, generally located in front of and
developed and operated by an adjacent business.
The Parklet concept was originally developed in San Francisco. Its success there has
led to Parklet programs in Oakland, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Jose
Birmingham, Michigan, Ft. Lauderdale and other cities.
Staff is recommending implementation of a one-year pilot program to permit up to five
Parklets on a temporary basis and subject to proposed criteria, in areas that can benefit
from enhanced pedestrian activity and improved streetscape design.
