A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CONDEMNING CHEF NUSRET
GOKQE'S INSENSITIVITY TO THE SUFFERING OF THE PEOPLE OF CUBA AND
VENEZUELA; FURTHER AFFIRMING THAT THE CITY OF MIAMI ("CITY") STANDS
TOGETHER WITH THE PEOPLE OF CUBA, VENEZUELA, AND THE LARGER
COMMUNITY OF IMMIGRANTS WHO ARE RIGHTFULLY DENOUNCING GOKQE'S
SUPPORT FOR AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES; DECLARING THAT THE NEITHER
THE CITY NOR ANY OF ITS AGENCIES, TRUSTS, OR BOARDS WILL SPEND ANY
OFFICIAL CITY FUNDS AT ANY OF GOKQE'S RESTAURANTS.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is the flagship city and leader of all thirty-four (34)
municipalities in Miami -Dade County in supporting human rights, freedom, and democracy
throughout the Americas and beyond; and
WHEREAS, a major portion of the City's residents have either fled or are native Miami -
born sons and daughters of those that have fled tyrannies that have oppressed human rights
and civil liberties; and
WHEREAS, basic human rights and civil liberties have been violated and trampled upon
in the countries of Cuba and Venezuela; and
WHEREAS, Turkish celebrity chef Nusret Gokge, who owns a chain of restaurants
including one in the Brickell area of the City, is known as "Salt Bae" for his theatrical style of
sprinkling salt on his steaks; and
WHEREAS, Gokge has previously posted videos and photographss on his Instagram
and Twitter demonstrating support for the authoritarian regimes of Cuba and Venezuela; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission condemns Gokge for his insensitivity towards
the people of Cuba and Venezuela and all those suffering from violations of human rights and
civil liberties;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to the Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission condemns Gokge's insensitivity to the suffering of the
people of Cuba and Venezuela.
Section 3. The City Commission reaffirms that the City stands together with the people
of Cuba, Venezuela, and the larger community of immigrants in the City who are rightfully
denouncing Gokge's support for the authoritarian regimes of Cuba and Venezuela.
Section 4. The City Commission declares that the neither the City nor any of its
agencies, trusts, or boards will spend any official City funds at Gokge's restaurants.
Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.

1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
