back in the lineup by the
start of the Braves series
next week.
Sierra, acquired In the
Ozuna trade, has not
looked good at all. He is
hitting just .169 and has
failed to walk even once in
72 plate appearances.
The Marlins' best out-
fielder has been Brian
Anderson, who is a natural
third baseman.
On Saturday, the three
outfielders on Mattingly's
lineup card were Rafael
Ortega, Austin Dean and
Isaac Galloway. Combined,
the three had Just 61 games
of major league experi-
en"e.
There's been some
good and there's been
some bad," Mattingly said.
The Marlins will be re-
minded of what once was
when the Yankees and
Stanton arrive on Tuesday
for a two -game series at
Marlins Park. And it will be
a painful reminder.
MAKING SUBSTITUTION
IN THE ROTATION
The Marlins are making
sure Jose Urena won't be
taking the mound during
their four -game series with
the Braves at the end of
next week.
Orel., who is appealing
the six -game suspension he
received for plunking Braves
rookie Ronald Acura Jr.
with his very first pitch in
Atlanta on Wednesday, will
now start Sunday against
the Nationals.
That wotdd leave him
lined up to face the Braves
in his next start.
But even if his appeal is
settled before then, Mat-
tingly made it clear the
would not appear in the
Braves series One way or the
other. Mattingly said that he
world slip EBeser Hernan-
dez into the rotation during
the Atlanta series.
Dan Stndly, Wei -Yin
Chen and Pablo Lopez
would round out the rota-
tion for the rest of the
four -game series.
"It's not something we
want to do," Mattingly said
of having Urena face the
Braves and risk retaliation.
With the rotation change
involving Urena, Lopez and
Trevor Richards will re-
ceive
n extra day of rest
and face New Yorb, in the
two -game series against
the Yankees.

Don Mattingly seldom
singles out a player for
criticism.
At least openly.
But Mattingly had littlo
choice Friday when asked
about rookie center fielder
Magneuris Sierra, who took
his leisurely time getting to
Bryce Harper's hit and
then lobbing the ball back
to the infield.
Harper promptly
stretched his single into a
double.
"That just can't happen,"
Mattingly said. "There's na
way in the world that guy
should ever go to second
base on that ball."
Mattingly continued.
"He's playing scared.
He's playing tentative,"
Mattingly slid of Sierra,
who was called into the
office after the game and
reprimanded. "You just
can't play like that here.
And it's one of the things
we won't keep watching."
Sierra was on the bench
Saturday after starting in
21 of the Marlins' previous
23 games.
It all underscored what's
become a glaring problem
fur the Marlins: replacing
what was the best outfield
in the majors a year ago is
not going smoothly or
quickly.
"it's pretty easy to say
you knew it was going to
be a big difference," Mat-
tingly said. "You're hoping
for the best with your
young guys and they're
going to come in and just
tear it up right away."
That hasn't come close
to happening.
When the Marlins traded
away their outfield trio of
Giancarlo Stanton, Chris-
tian Yelich and Marcell
Ozuna, they left them-
selves with not Just a hole
to fill but a large vacuum.
Marlins outfielders led
the majors last season with
an OPS (on -lase plus slug-
gingpereentage) of.896.
The Yankees' outfield,
which ranked second,
wasn't even close at .853.
This year?
The Marlins outfielders
rank 28th of 30 teams —
ahead of only the Royals
and White Sox — with an
OPS of.686.
BOSTON RED SOS
Red Sox put Sale
back on disabled list
From Miami Herald Wire Se,
BOSTON
Chris Sale understands
it's a perfect time for the
Boston Red Sox to be cau-
tious with his troublesome
shoulder. He's just frustrat-
ed that he's back on the
disabled list.
Boston returned the ace
lefty to the 10-day disabled
list Saturday after just one
healthy start. He was al-
ready on the DL earlier this
month with what the team
called mild shoulder in-
flammation.
Last Sunday, he was
activated against the Balti-
more Orioles and struck
out 12 in five shutout in-
nings, which extended his
scoreless innings streak to
28. He is 12-4 with an AL -
leading 1.97 ERA and 6-0
with a 0.20 ERA in his past
se
ven starts.
"It's definitely less than
it was last time," he said,
standing in the middle of
the clubhouse before Bos-
ton's scheduled game
against Tampa Bay. "1t
didn't bounce back, wasn't
really responding the way
we wanted it to. Given kind
of where we are, it was
kind of right call to give it
some rest and stay on top
of it. You don't want to be
playing catch up during a
time like this."
With Boston holding the
a big lead in the AL East
and the best record in the
majors, Sale will get some
rest for what the team
hopes will be a long post -
season "Obviously, terrible
timing, not exactly the
most ideal situation. To he
honest, quite miserable for
me. But, at the same time,
I'm not going to sit around
and pout," he said, "I'm
going to keep my chin up.
I'm on the best team that
ever
walked the planet.
I've good teammates that
have my back, and I appre-
ciate that."
Manager Alex Cora said
the team wasn't about to
take any chances.
"I think it's a smart
move," he said. "This guy
is very important to what
we're trying to accomplish
and if he needs to skip one,
two, three [starts], whatev-
we're willing to do that.
He'll be back. Like he said,
he feels better than the last
time we put him on the DL,
so he'll get his rest, he'll go
through treatment and
well go from therm."
Sale, 29, is a top conten-
der for the AL Cy Young
Award, but the understands
the need to be patient this
time. He said the treat-
ments seem to be working.
Sale was first put on the DL
on July 31.
The move was retro-
active to Wednesday. To
fill his roster spot, the Red
Sox recalled nighty Bran-
don Workman from Triple
A Pawtucket. The reliever
is 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA in
26 appearances.
