A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE
PLACEMENT OF A PLAZA DESIGNATION PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-136(2) OF
THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"), AT
THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTHWEST 14TH AVENUE AND SOUTHWEST 8TH
STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO COMMEMORATE MANUEL A. "EL MONO"
GONZALEZ, SUBJECT TO ALL APPLICABLE PERMITTING REQUIREMENTS.
WHEREAS, Manuel A. Gonzalez, affectionately known as "El Mono," was a Cuban exile
who emigrated to the City of Miami ("City"); and
WHEREAS, Manuel A. Gonzalez was a certified public accountant and a member of the
Kiwanis Club of Little Havana ("Kiwanis") for nearly four (4) decades; and
WHEREAS, during his nearly four (4) decades as a member of the Kiwanis, Manuel A.
Gonzalez was the only member to serve as the Kiwanis President for two (2) terms and later
served on its Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Manuel A. Gonzalez was a pillar of the community and, with the help of his
fellow Kiwanis and the organization, provided school supplies and toys to the poorest children in
the community and hot meals to the elderly during the holidays; and
WHEREAS, in 1987, Manuel A. Gonzalez created the Kiwanis of Little Havana
Foundation ("Foundation"); and
WHEREAS, one of the key projects of the Foundation was the establishment of a
scholarship program for low income, Hispanic students, which to date has provided more than
three million dollars ($3,000,000.00) in scholarship aid and has enabled more than three
hundred (300) students to attend higher education; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission wishes to commemorate Manuel A. Gonzalez's
life and his contribution to the City by placing a plaza designation at the intersection of
Southwest 14th Avenue and Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida, an intersection made famous
by him and the Kiwanis through the Annual Carnival Miami and the Calle Ocho street party;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The placement of a plaza designation pursuant to Section 54-136(2) of the
Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, at the intersection of Southwest 14th Avenue
and Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida, to commemorate Manuel A. "El Mono" Gonzalez, is
authorized,' subject to all applicable permitting requirements.
Section 3 . This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor2.

1 The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by
the City Attorney, including but not limited, to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and City Code
provisions.
2 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
