FUNDING PROPOSAL TO THE CITY OF MIAMI July 7, 2018 Lotus House is requesting $35,000 funding to provide for food and meals expenses for Miami women, youth and children experiencing homelessness. The line item budget below outlines the use of funds. Lotus House serves high special needs homeless women, youth and children in Miami -Dade: 74% are Black; 22%© Latina and 4% White/Other; ages 0-80's. 98% have significant urgent/unmet medical/mental health conditions, 95% are trauma survivors, 15% are 55+ and 21.6% have complex medical needs. Over 80% of those we serve are successfully placed in housing outside the shelter system. Winner of the 2016 Non -Profit Innovation Award of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the new $28 million Lotus Village is a center for innovation, education, research, dialogue and information sharing to end and prevent homelessness in our community and across this nation. Based on a decade of service to high special needs women and children, Lotus Village is designed as a prototype for the future at a time when homelessness is epidemic and urban communities all across our country are struggling for solutions. Effective methods to end and prevent homelessness for children and families who are amongst the most fragile and needy are urgently needed. Lotus Village is an innovative and scalable model for the future, its development being funded entirely through the generosity of community, philanthropists and tax credit financing. Utilizing enriched, evidence based, best practices, tools and resources, this life changing project nourishes and uplifts women, youth and children on every level. Lotus Village has expanded the capacity of Lotus House to shelter 490+ women, youth and children (or an estimated 900+ per year) in a state of the art facility that includes specialized support service nodes embedded within our residential programs, an intake sanctuary, healing hands salon, art & activities lab, education center and computer library, yoga and exercise room, model therapeutic early childcare and education center, edible rooftop urban garden, and working classroom kitchen. This new comprehensive homeless services facility is one of the largest shelters in the country exclusively serving women and children, and unique in the breadth and depth of its therapeutic supports and protective factors to heal and strengthen children and families experiencing homelessness. Lotus Village includes major partnerships such as an onsite, state of the art health clinic (with 6 exam rooms and 7 dental operatories) operated by Jessie Trice Community Health System, serving both Lotus Village and our Overtown neighborhood. Also onsite, the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Education operates an innovative childcare center with a therapeutic overlay provided by Lotus House. All of this is only possible with the support of our community. Without the generous funding, donations and volunteerism we receive - Lotus Village will not be able to fully fund operations for new beds desperately needed by women, youth and children in our community.
