I have enjoyed working alongside a group of dedicated professionals that develops amazing initiatives for young golfers. Under the direction of Charlie DeLucca and Charlie DeLucca III, this event has grown over its history of success involving the participation of more than 650 youngsters and their families representing more than 55 countries who come to the beautiful Dora! Golf Resort & Spa during the month of December. More than 16,000 players have participated during the tournament's long career. It takes the combined efforts of the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who work tirelessly alongside Charlie DeLucca in his continuing support of youth activities to ensure the success of this event so that the participants feel at home, enjoy a good time, and interact with their peers from many countries. One of the most important aspects of the event is the inspiration to develop the skills necessary to overcome obstacles in their personal development through the nine core values of the First Tee program. In designing this guide, we have included information about those who have participated in the tournament since its inception, sponsors, prior winners, notes, interviews, and testimonials to add to the importance of the event. City Clerk Miami's DeLucca receives Platinum performance Award Inaugural honor recognizes PGA TOUR Latinoamerica key contributors while memorializing the life of Peru's Dr. Humberto Berger December 03, 2017 I By Laury Livsey, PGATOURLA.COM MIAMI, FLORIDA—Charlie DeLucca, Jr., a long-time golf professional in South Florida and a strong proponent of junior golf in the state, is the inaugural recipient of the Platinum Performance Award presented by PGA TOUR Latinoamerica. Jack Warfield, President of PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, bestowed the award at a ceremony following the conclusion of the Tour's season -ending Shell Championship. The Platinum Performance Award is designed to memorialize Peru's Dr. Humberto Berger, a long-time proponent of golf in Latin America, who died earlier this year. The Platinum Performance Award recognizes those who support and help grow golf in places where PGA TOUR Latinoamerica plays. DeLucca is President/Secretaryof DeLucca Enterprises, which manages and operates Melreese Country Club/International Links Miami, host site of the Shell Championship. A veteran of the United States Navy, following his honorable discharge from the military in 1962, DeLucca became the youngest head PGA professional in the United States, at age 21, at Miami Lakes Inn and Country Club. Since then, DeLucca has maintained a consistent presence in South Florida golf circles, with a particular emphasis on junior golf instruction, beginning formally in 1964 with the creation of the Dade Amateur Golf Association. During his illustrious career, Delucca has also served on the Board of Directors of the Amputee Education Foundation, which provides sports - related opportunities for the physically impaired. He was also an Advisory Board member of Miami's Midnight Basketball The First Tee' League that afforded at -risk kids a viable and productive night-time activity. Melreese Country Club/International Links Miami is home to The First Tee of Miami. In 2002, DeLucca became a member of the Florida Junior Golf Council at the same time he conceived the idea for the Florida license plate emblazoned with the words "Golf Capital of the World," championing that bill's passage into law through the state legislature. Proceeds of the sale of the plate benefits junior golf foundations throughout Florida. "Charlie's reputation and his passion for youth golf is second to none. His relationships with city, county and state leaders about what their commitment to the youth of Florida should be is what has always impressed me about Charlie," said Warfield. "What strikes most people when they meet Charlie, myself included, is his passion for The First Tee. What he does to keep The First Tee strong and vibrant for the kids who come through the program is unparalleled in Florida. He is just a great friend of the game." 36th Annual Dora! City Clerk Behind the Study The First , Tee® A Lasting Impact: The First Tee's Role in Fostering Positive Youth Development WHY? Evaluating programs is at the heart of a healthy nonprofit organization. The results of this survey are consistent with, and provide additional support to, the findings of previous longitudinal, evidence - based research conducted on The First Tee programs.' Through this research, The First Tee has gone a step further and examined the depth of participant/coach relationships respective to the acquisition of life skills associated with positive youth development, something few organizations have done. Central themes emerging from the study: 1 Other research has shown that positive youth development programs that lack fidelity in delivery can do more harm than good. Data from The First Tee's recent study supports that coaches at the chapters are effectively using, as intended, four "Building Blocks" (Activity -based, Mastery -driven, Empowering Youth and Continuous Learning) when delivering the program. These results also support the importance of a non -family adult mentor, such as a coach, in the lives of youth'. The participant/coach relationships established within The First Tee Life Skills Experience are meaningful and deep from the participants' and alumni perspectives. 2 Additionally, a recent GradNation report' released by America's Promise Alliance noted that while having a caring relationship with a non -family adult is important, it alone may not result in positive youth development outcomes. Relationships are most effective when they serve as an anchoring function where the adult provides a gateway to a larger web of peer and adult support, as well as, a variety of new experiences. Data suggests The First Tee coaches may provide this anchoring function through their relationships with participants. 3 As participants progress through The First Tee Life Skills Experience they reported the quality of their relationships with coaches increased. Coaches play a critical role in how participants define their experience. The key message learned from these participants and alumni is that coaching for positive youth development is not done to youth, rather, it is founded on relationships that are built with youth. This message is at the heart of The First Tee. "The First Tee is a great experience. It's definitely going to help you later in life when you're trying to make a hard decision or in a situation when you don't know what to do." —Teen participant Quantitative and qualitative study conducted by: Springfield College Center for Youth Development & Research, 2015 Dr. Albert Petitpas, Dr. Thaddeus J. France III, Dr. Elizabeth Mullin (and Maura Bergan, Greg Margolis, Meghan Krasnow, Riley McGhee, Leonardo Ruiz) Methodology: Coach Athlete Relationship Survey (873 teen-age participants and 93 alumni respondents), which is a valid and reliable instrument, as well as life skills questions based on The First Tee curriculum and qualitative interviews with six teen focus groups. YLearningFamil Center and CommunityImpact In January of 2013, the First Tee Learning Center was established and supported by the City and the Sports and Exhibition Authority. This allowed us to provide additional and full time inclusive after school and summer programs, offering tutoring assistance to all students including at risk and disabled students. Our dedicated staff and mentors teach core values, life skills and health and wellness. We also teach students how to generalize these lessons and habits into daily living. As a result, our programs have a positive impact on thousands of children and young adults. The First Tee Learning center offers many opportunities for youth development. Academically, we have strong teaching and outcome elements. Our comprehensive academic preparation has resulted in 100% successful college acceptance for all 73 graduates over the past 4 years. Our beautiful golf course is unparalleled among municipal and public courses and exceeds many inthe private club domain. Because of your substantial investment and our outstanding grounds keeping, International Links - Melreese Country Club is in high demand to host events at every level. Millions of dollars are raised each year by various community groups sponsoring golf outings and utilizing our facilities, amenities and our restaurant. These community events create funding for many charitable organizations that provide an array of services to our residents. Most notable are The City of Miami Golf Classic, benefiting the Sandra DeLucca Center, the City Managers Tournament, benefiting "Do the Right Thing", and the Eric Compton Tournament benefiting Organ Transplants. Almost $2.5 million has been raised over the past three years here at International Links - Melreese Country Club for charitable causes. Because of the expertise and wealth of experience contained here at International Links - Melreese Country Club, we are administering additional programs in several different segments of the industry, including professional development. We are offering Rules Clinics for adults in conjunction with the Florida State Golf Association. These clinics allow local community and business leaders to enhance their rules and operations knowledge and assist in the growth of the game. We have also developed a winter, spring, and summer golf competition, which allowourjuniorstocompeteyear-round. In addition to the tournaments, we have branched out into the communities and have replicated our program on two additional sites, operating two program locations in Doral and the Redlands. We have also expanded our SNAG program (starting new at golf) from public school participants (70,000) to private and charter schools. We are proud to have created the first "Get Fit" program for special needs adults providing them the opportunity to develop their physical skills while creating self-sufficiency and socialization skills, on and off the golf course. In addition, we have also introduced an internationally recognized program from Argentina, developed by Nora Goldfinger, called Heme Aqui which uses music and dance movement to teach golf to non-verbal and special needs individuals. We are proud of our numerous and diverse programs but are especially proud of our special program for our veterans. The HOPE project uses golf City Clerk to assist our injured war veterans in the challenges they face with ordinary assimilation, back into normal life. We provide augmentative technology to overcome their physical issues and provide a positive, supportive atmosphere for social receptivity and rehabilitation. We also offer two levels of programming strictly for girls: Girls Golf of Miami, which is an LPGA sponsored event allowing young girls to become exposed to the game of golf at an introductory level. As the young ladies progress and mature they move into the Drive for Excellence program sponsored by the Orange Bowl Committee, which further develops skills and incorporates a focus on academic achievement and time management to ensure success. Also throughout the year, Thursday through Sunday our First Tee clinics are offered to kids at all skill levels. Each clinic provides curriculum on core life values with healthy habits embedded in the instruction. A special component of the clinic introduces mentors that enlighten and motivate our students with their life -success stories and strategies. We are most proud of the Charlie DeLucca School of Golf. The school, under the direction of Charlie DeLucca III runs every summer for 10 weeks. During that time, all aspects of The First Tee are woven into a positive reinforcement of physical and social skills with academics emphasized and awards given for outstanding efforts and achievements weekly. In conclusion, The First Tee Miami at Melreese Country Club has given a great deal back to this community. Without the support of The City of Miami our success would be limited. Your consistent favorable consideration is greatly appreciated. The healthy habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part of The First Tee. Social: Friends Maintaining healthy relationships includes surrounding oneself with friends and supportive people, while effectively handling challenging situations, including bullying and navigating the digital age with social media. School Success in school - learning, building relationships and contributing to the school environment - leads to success in other areas of life. Community Like the health of one's body, it is important to also explore the health of one's community and discover how one can give back and care for its environment and safety. City Clerk In 2003, The First Tee Miami became a reality as a growth product of The Dade Amateur Golf Association. By participating in The First Tee, young people are introduced to core values and healthy habits, which are reinforced throughout the program. Our parents are always encouraged to support First Tee values and behaviors. Below are reflections on how the First Tee has positively effected their sons and daughters. I am thankful with The First Tee organization. My boys join it 3 years ago since that time we have been part of it. They have improved in many things such as: concentration, learning the game of golf and behavior. Most importantly they have learned the rules and values of golf which include Honesty, Responsibility and SELF CONTROL Ninoska Marcucci Words cannot express the thanks that my family has for the First Tee of Miami. We are so grateful for the guidance over the years that they have provided our children. They have taught them the 9 core values which is an important baseline for their continued success. Bellkys &Anthony Blaha As a school Principal and a parent of 2 junior golfers, I am very appreciative of the support the First Tee of Miami has given to children in the South Florida area and to my own family. They run a top notch program and have an amazing staff of individuals who teach great lessons in golf and life. My own daughter Alexa will be attending Boston College next fall on a golf scholarship and I owe much gratitude to the First Tee of Miami for their unwaivering support through the years. She represented the First Tee of Miami in many local, regional and state tournaments and wore her orange shirt proudly! Jorge A. Rivas, Principal Riviera Middle School The First Tee program has helped mold our daughter in so many ways that we can't explain. She has not only become a better golfer, but she's become a lot more sociable with her peers on and off of the golf course. Kaylah has also been able to apply a lot of the first tee's core values into the classroom which is enabling her to excel academically. Kenneth &Alicia Having achieved that my son Valentino has been accepted to play this tournament is very important for him and for our whole family. This type of initiative is a model to ensure that all participants have the opportunity to create excellent relationships and also rely on really motivating principles. Publix Jr. Classic is an event model that has no equal. Thanks to all the organizers and especially to John Reed and De Lucca father and son who do so much for the youth. A clear example of organization and dedication directed to the welfare of our children. Angel Cattaneo pua<.; 40 P c i CIa55 36th Annual Dora! One of our friends recommended this program for our son Matthew and it only took one day to fall in love with the people, the facilities, and the game of golf. I am a very involved mom, always volunteering with the PTA at school. Here, we found an open-door policy where volunteering was not only encouraged, but needed. Both my husband and I are now First Tee Coaches in Training, we keep volunteering every Saturday and enjoy every minute of our experience teaching beginner golfers the fundamentals of the game. As parents, we have seen the tremendous impact that The First Tee has made in our son, Matthew. He came here as a small boy. Now he is growing into a very respectful, loving, and amazing young man. We owe this program so much. For us, Melreese International Links is our second home, and we are very proud of being part of The First Tee Family. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to give back to the community, and for providing such a great environment for our son and young golfers in Miami. Love, Kate Tobon. SLAM Charter School opened five years ago and the First Tee of Miami was one of the school's first partners. They have been instrumental in providing opportunities to our student - athletes, who financially would have never had the resources to participate in golf. The First Tee has allowed other students in our school to participate in events and become active members of the community, which is critical to the educational process. As I began to see how the First Tee instilled its core values on our students, while participating in a sport, I immediately inquired about enrolling my daughters in their program. The following year, I enrolled my 2 oldest daughters and they have been participating ever since. Although I live in the north end of town, my daughters enjoy the program so much that they insist on driving down to be part of this first-class organization. The instruction they receive is very good, the facilities are great, and the educational values components is essential. These aspects make this program successful but what makes it truly special is the staff. For the first time as a parent, I felt comfortable enough to leave my children alone with someone else, other than family. The truth is that the First Tee is an extension of our family now. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to all the youth you serve. Rey Breto Vice Principal Sports Leadership and Management Charter School Jamila Gowdy's parent statement I am happy and grateful to share my perspective on how First Tee of Miami's Golf programs have impacted our family and the local community. My daughter, Jamila Gowdy, begin attending First Tee programs as a ninth grader in high school. She played on the golf team and she was looking for some expert golf training to improve her game. So far, she is the only person in our family that plays golf. We have become a golf family because First Tee of Miami taught us the golf life. And what Jamila discovered at First Tee of Miami was the whole kit-n-caboodle of golf from A-to-Z! Friendship - She met other high school golfers ranging from beginners to number one in the state players. Jamila made friends for life with a few of the players and coaches. All of the staff from the Greens, equipment, the pro shop, to the cafe welcomed us. Right away our family felt at home at First Tee because were with young golfers, families and staff that were just like us. Expert instruction - At First Tee coaches take kids like Jamila under their wings and mentor them fostering discipline as well as self-assurance. I could name each First Tee coach and how they helped her with her swing, her grip, the right clubs, and so much more. First Tee gave Jamila her first golf course "home". Status - Jamila was often asked, "What is your home course?" and when she responded, First Tee at Melreese, people were impressed and Jamila felt proud. Through First Tee volunteering, she worked at several tournaments at the Doral Golf course at the Cadillac Open as well as the Publix sponsored tournaments. The home tournaments at First Tee exposed Jamila to the business and service of golfing. Academic excellence - First Tee made it possible for Jamila to benefit from Saturday and after school tutoring free of charge. There was an expectation of educational excellence to the point where an incredible CAP counselor from a local private school helped her perfect her college essay. That alone is worth its weight in golf balls. As parents we want our children to associate with friends that have similar values like good grades in school, disciplined, obedient and coachable. And that is exactly what you will find with the children who participate in First Tee programs. It was First Tee where our family became a golf family and for welcoming us. WHEN IS I"; Every Sunday at 11:00 am until 12:30 pm. An 'on course' play day every 4th class (Day and time TBD) VVI7IPPI- IS It will be held at Melreese Golf Course f vCa MY CHILD NEED CLUBS Absolutely. This is not a beginner class. If your child expects to become a better golfer, they must have their own, properly fitted, set of clubs to use. WHAT CAN MY CHILD EXPECT TO LEARN AT THE THESE ACADEMY CLASSES? We will provide information, instruction and training on all aspects of the game through drills & demonstrations, as well as hands-on, individualized teaching when needed. Besides the basics of driving, chipping, putting etc, during our on -course play days will emphasize proper course management, work on `troublee lies', discuss rules and impart strategies on the mental side of the game such as how the player might/should respond in a given situation to win an event, save par or to break their previous low scoring round. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD CAN PARTICIPATE? They must have played a golf course before; score is somewhat irrelevant. They must have their own clubs and be able to carry them and/or use a pull cart alone. They must be familiar with golf course etiquette and be aware of proper pace -of -play. If your child does not currently possess these skills, know that they are learning them through The First Tee programs at the course and will be able to participate at a later date. The native Miamian was one of the pioneers that helped to teach the game of golf to thousands of lucky people. His most famous student was the late great boxing champion Sugar Ray Robinson. His work with children and audits paved the way for his 1988 induction into the National Black Golfers Hall of Fame. As a player, he was second to none as he won United Golf Association Championships from 1953-1956. Through various programming and fundraising activities DAGA has been an agent of support and positive change for the entire community which has impacted individuals of all abilities. • In 1990, the City of Miami Programs for Persons with Disabilities implemented the inaugural Edward James Olmos Golf Classic (later renamed) the City of Miami Golf Classic, to raise money for its programs. DAGA participated (and won the first year) in the tournament which was held at the Miami Springs Country Club. • In 1991, DAGA began working directly with Special Olympics to bring golf to individuals with developmental disabilities. Annually, it hosts 2,916 athletes with disabilities throughout Miami Dade County. • In 1994, DAGA spearheaded the organizing, fundraising, logistics and operations of the Golf Tournament, bringing it to the next level with its expertise and resources. • In 2001, the City of Miami inaugurated the Sandra DeLucca Developmental Center (SDDC) which is the home of the Parks Disabilities Division and first facility of its kind in the city exclusively dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities. • In 2015, the Golf Classic celebrated 25 years of fundraising success with over $1,000,000 being raised towards providing quality programming and services to all the individuals with developmental disabilities at the Center. • In 2017, the fundraising goal for the 27th Annual Golf Classic is to help raise money for the GET FIT Softball Team to go back to the Special Olympics Nationals Games and represent Florida once again in Seattle, WA. In addition to finish the remodeling of the newly expanded SDDC. PURL 84 P c f CIa55 36th Annual Dora!
