Emergency Acquisition of Removal
Services for Derelict Vessels
The Department of Real Estate and Asset Management is respectfully requesting approval for
the emergency acquisition of removal services for derelict vessels due to Hurricane Irma. The
City's Marine Patrol Department identified approximately 137 damaged, abandoned, and/or
derelict vessels in City of Miami Waterways that pose an immediate threat to the environment,
public healthJsafety, and navigation. The amount could increase as some of the vessels are
completely submerged underwater. The approval of this service is critical to the expedient
removal of hazardous materials and obstructions in our navigable waterways. These hazards
consist of sunken vessels and associated debris, such as: wood, fiberglass, plastics, and other
synthetic debris. The acquisition of this service, including the submerged vessels, could be
approximately $1.2M.
Your signature below affirms your decision to declare the acquisition of removal services for
derelict vessels as an emergency.
