Subject: Renaming Police Training Facility - Chief John F. Timoney
Purpose of Item:
The City of Miami (City) and the Miami Police Department (MPD) desires to recognize
and honor the legacy and invaluable service of former Chief of Police, John F. Timoney
("Chief Timoney").
Background of Item:
Chief Timoney was initially employed by the City in January of 2003 to serve as MPD's
Chief of Police, a position he held until retiring in 2010. During his tenure, Chief
Timoney employed innovative strategies that helped reverse years of rising crime rates
in the City and was responsible for implementing MPD protocols that significantly
reduced the number of police shootings and other kinds of violent encounters between
MPD officers and civilians currently still in place. Chief Timoney was ultimately
recognized nationally and internationally as a leader and expert in law enforcement,
democratic policing, and was widely regarded as one of the most progressive and
effective police chiefs in the country. Chief Timoney assisted in establishing the City's
Police Training Facility (Miami Police College"), a law enforcement college in the City for
police recruits coupled with a high school component to provide a pathway for Miami
Dade County students interested in a career in law enforcement. MPD requests the
City Commission to rename the Miami Police College to the "John F. Timoney Police
College" to honor his legacy to the City and law enforcement.
