Docomomo, the international advocate for documentation and
conservation of buildings of the Modern Movement, with its thousands of
members that span 70 countries, is keenly aware of the historic Babylon
Apartments located in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami.
As the leading organization in the United States committed to supporting
the preservation of modern architecture, we, along with our local colleagues
and Docomomo US/Florida urge you to take immediate action to save one
of the first buildings designed by Miami's own internationally famous firm,
Arquitectonica.
The bold and futuristic design for the Babylon Apartments thrusted Miami
into the international spotlight in the 1980s and represented a new
modernism in Miami.
As you are no doubt aware, the Babylon Apartments are of exceptional
historic importance and anything outside of preservation would be a terrible
loss for the City of Miami.
We believe the building has the capacity to be a cultural attraction for
decades to come and a modern tourist attraction if restored with such an
opportunity in mind.
We appreciate your time and consideration of this historic and iconic
building.
Sincerely,
Liz Waytkus
Executive Director
