Submittal-Amy Huber-Letters in Support of Ransom Everglades Special Area Plan
,r f Superintendent of Schools Alberto M Carvelho January 23, 2018 To Whom It May Concern: giving our students the world Miami -Dade County School Board D, Lawrence S Feldman, Chair Dr. Marta P4rez, Vice Chair Dr Dorothy Rendross-Mindingall Susie V. Castillo Dr Steve Gallon Ill Peria rebates Henantrn Dr. Martin Karp Lubby Navarro Man Tere Rojas My name is William Aristide, and I am the Principal of Booker T. Washington Senior High School, located in Overtown, Miami. For the past six years, our school has enjoyed collaborating with Ransom Everglades through a weeklong student exchange program that successfully brings our two communities together. It is my pleasure to write in support of Ransom Everglades, given how much the school has invested in the students of Booker T. Washington Senior High School and in the future of Miami overall. Submitted into the pukli ly record r ite}n(s) on l / n. m City Cleric Located only five miles apart from one another, Booker T. Washington and Ransom Everglades stand as two of the most historically significant educational institutions in Miami - Dade County. Despite our proximity, the paths of our respective students are unfortunately unlikely ever to cross, given the stringent racial, ethnic, and class divisions that can at times characterize Miami. The leaders and administrators from both schools have chosen to support a program that flies in the face of that reality, putting students from each school in partnerships with one another, and enabling them to foster lasting and transformative relationships. Towards the end of the week, Ransom Everglades hosts a dinner for the students involved, as well as for their parents and loved ones. At that event, every student who participated steps to the podium and speaks about what the experience has meant to him/her. Their testimonials demonstrate how much stronger we are together than we are apart. Our shared future is brighter because of this program, because it provides our students with a broader sense of the world and with an expanded sense of what is possible when we work together. Last year Ransom Everglades launched the exchange by inviting all twenty-four of our student participants to attend a production of Defamation the Play, a professional stage production that uses a courtroom drama to engage audience members in an exploration of racial, class, gender, and religious differences. This year, they have decided to begin the week by bringing in Michael Fosberg, who will perform his play, Incognito, which addresses many of the same themes through one man's journey to better understand his identity. These productions provide our students with a common text that they can return to throughout the week, as they work together to examine not only their differences, but their similarities, as well. I impart these anecdotes simply to illustrate how Ransom Everglades has emerged as an important partner for Booker T. Washington Senior High School in our ongoing effort to support our students, nurture their hearts and minds, and serve the city we all share. Ransom Everglades School is a proven leader in a city that needs institutions with vision and with the will and resources to make that vision a reality. Thank you for your time and consideration. Maintaining the human -sized character, the charm, and the vitality of the Grove are issues close to my heart. My ties to the Grove run deep: I spent my childhood living down the street from Ransom on South Bayshore Drive; I attended both Church and elementary school at St. Hugh School (lass of 1994) right across the street from Ransom. I then attended high school at Ransom as a student — and now am proud and humbled to be counted as a member of Ransom's faculty. Moreover, I own a condominium in District 2 and will be moving back as a resident within the next few months. My investment emotionally and otherwise in the neighborhood is great. As long as I can remember, Ransom Everglades has always been a central part of the experience of the Grove for me, and I know that this SAP will allow it to continue its mission of service both to its students and the broader community in Miami. The school's commitment to environmental sustainability and resiliency will ensure that a sizable property on the coast of our city will serves as an enduring source of greenery, coastal protection with the mangroves, environmental education for our citizens (many students live in the Grove or end up moving to the Grove as adults), and historical heritage. I trust the School to be a great steward of the property, its historic structures, and its beautiful tree canopy. As a teacher I enjoy patronizing the Grove's great restaurants after school, catching some organic eats at Choices, and relaxing with Panther coffee on a walk in Peacock Park. Many of our students patronize these venues daily. And as a source of community service and facilities and programs for the, and with scholarships directly impacting residents of the West Grove, I cannot think of a better driver of the Grove's success and vibrancy than Ransom Everglades School. Thank you very much for considering my opinion. I write for your vote in favor of the Revised Special Area Plan for Ransom Everglades School. I would like to briefly share with you my feelings about Ransom Everglades as an alumna and why I believe the Revised Special Area Plan should be approved. There are very few constants in this world. Our lives, culture, and physical surroundings are in a perpetual state of flux. Ransom Everglades on the other hand is a constant. It has an unfailing tradition of excellence in education. It is one of the oldest institutions in Miami. It has been in existence longer than we have been alive. Ransom is much more than a school to me and my family. it is home. Two of my sons have attended Ransom as well as my two brothers. Ransom has literally been a refuge for all of us. I know I am not alone in these feelings of affection for my alma mater. Numerous graduates have confided that they found stability at Ransom when stability was absent in their homes. Translated from Latin alma mater means, "nourishing mother." This definition is quite apt for this unique place of leaming. Ransom Everglades' nourishing impact stretches far beyond its walls into the community at large by sharing its facilities, offering scholarships, and providing multiple forms of educational outreach. This has been going on for decades. As a Board member of Bamade Historic State Park I can attest to Ransom's generous willingness to share its facilities with neighboring organizations. The Bamacle and Ransom have worked together for years. Finally, as part of Paul Ransom's mission, Ransom graduates are educated to be leaders and instilled with the important value of giving back locally, nationally, and intemationally. Just this week I witnessed this leadership in action at the Annual Meeting of Plymouth Church. The Immediate Past Head of the Board gave an address and she is a Ransom graduate! Ransom Everglades has been a good neighbor for over a century. The expansion of the Upper Campus under the Revised Special Area Plan would indeed help perpetuate Paul Ransom's overarching goals of excellence in education along with serving God, country, and fellow man. The plans submitted to the City of Miami demonstrate the school's goals in preserving green space and preserving the existing tree canopy. As indicated in the plan, assurances are given for environmental preservation and no impact to the tree canopy and landscaping in the area are anticipated. The school has prepared the plans with careful consideration of the history and tradition of the neighborhood (Coconut Grove), following the highest standards of social responsibility and honoring its long-term commitment to the City of Miami. As a City neighbor, the school has a vested interest in ensuring this development is successful and consistent with the City's values and objectives, and therefore, the plan maximizes its benefits to the community, protects the neighborhood and exceeds the City's standards and requirements. As you know, the school has a long tradition of been one of the leading educational institutions preparing the future generations of professionals striving to work for the advancement and success of the City of Miami community. The school not only emphasizes the educational values of academic excellence, but also mirrors the City's diversity and strongly instills upon the students, teachers and parents the importance of permanently giving back to the community. This project will improve the school's ability to provide benefits to the City and to continue fulfilling its educational mission. We would appreciate if you could give careful consideration to the approval of the school plans, which clearly offer a positive impact to the City and the Coconut Grove neighborhood. As a Miamian who's involved in college -level education I believe the having high -quality educational institutions in Miami is a pillar on which to build a better future for our city. Citizens and elective representatives can make a difference on this front by actively supporting the efforts of educational institutions at all levels, and specifically RE activities. RE is one of those institutions which has proactively changed and improved the local community in Coconut Grove. By being faithful to Paul Ransom's vision of being positive contributors to the community, RE has formed generations of community -engaged Miamians who will continue to make a difference in the wellbeing of others. The improvements proposed for La Brisa property will make a contribution to Coconut Grove and to the broader Miami community. Our two sons attend Ransom Everglades and what we have learned to appreciate about the school over the past five years is its full-fledged commitment to the community. It is a commitment that is part of the ethos of the school that Paul Ransom founded in 1903 and that is stronger than ever today. 'Just this week, our eldest son volunteered with his soccer team at the St. Albans Child Enrichment Center in Coconut Grove where they read to the children and played soccer with them. This commitment to St. Albans by Ransom student athletes has been going on for years and helps St. Alban's promote its mission of "serving a unique population that will have a positive impact not only on the children, but also on the families and the surrounding community." Our son volunteered not but because he had to do it, but because he wanted to do it. That is what a good community member does and that is what they instill in the students at Ransom. While Ransom is known for its rigorous academic classes and challenging extracurricular activities, there is another classroom setting that is even more important. It is the classroom of life, where you learn the importance of putting more into this world than you take out. Part of that "bigger" classroom also takes place at Ransom through outreach efforts like the Breakthrough Miami program, that inspires at -risk middle school students to recognize and reach their full potential and now serves more than 1,000 students from Miami, out of a rent-free office on our Middle School campus and counts on dozens of mentors of the Ransom student body on a weekly basis. This and other similar programs are really at the core of what Ransom represents and why it has been a valued member of the City of Miami community for close to 115 years. It is truly a private school serving a public purpose. That is why we ask for your support on this ordinance, to allow Ransom to expand in a responsible manner and become and even more supportive and integral member of the City of Miami and Coconut Grove communities. It was known as Ransom at the time, prior to its merger in the 1970s with Everglades School. I enrolled at Ransom in 1952 and attended six years. We were a small school then. My graduating class had ten members. I have to thank Ransom, its faculty and staff for preparing me for three great institutions, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BS in Business Administration), the University of Florida (JD, Law) and the University of Miami (MBA), and life in general. I entered Ransom in 1952 as a shy kid, with not an overly ambitious agenda for success. Ransom provided a mission for me, and developed leadership skills. I have followed Ransom closely throughout the years. Indeed, I was on the Board in the 1970s.1 still look forward to receiving emails and other publications. I even occasionally am in touch with my English teacher, Dan Bowden. The plan to integrate Ransom -Everglades' campus with La Brista is a challenging opportunity. The current campus reflects the tremendous growth in buildings and other facilities since I graduated in 1958. On my last visit, I realized that the campus could use a little "breathing room," with many structures now occupying what used to be our parking spaces. With La Brista's acreage adding that breathing space, I was pleased that very little construction will be added to its seven acres. Ransom -Everglades' management and staff are responsible and they can be counted on to preserve the majestic and tranquil environment that exists today, only improving the grandeur and experience. Having grown up in Coconut Grove and worked at Ryder System on South Bayshore Drive, I believe that the Grove itself will benefit from enhancing what already is a prestigious and respected institution. I wish it were possible for me to attend tomorrow's meeting when you review the application. Unfortunately, having relocating to Phoenix, Arizona in 1997, that is not practical. I could not more strongly recommend your approval of the plan to integrate the two parcels. There will only be winners: the community, the school, and, most importantly, our future generation of students. Sincerely, James A. You may not recall, but I attended Ransom in the 1970's and have remained an active alumni since then. Throughout this time, the school has maintained an unwavering mission to produce great graduates that care and service the community. Ransom's standing has continued to improve, sending more and more graduates to amazing schools, and Inviting the community to great programs like TEDx Talks and sponsoring the Breakthrough Miami educational program. Equally important, having top-quality educational institutions in Miami is essential to attracting businesses that need to attract and maintain top-quality executive talent. The new expansion of the school will facilitate the next evolution of the institution, deeper into science and math. This is essential to the community in the long run. I had a wonderful experience during my five years at Ransom, and know that it continues to have a great future ahead of it. I hope that the Commission will consider favorably their application before you. For my part, I've been living in New York and London and working in London for a few years now. The detailed plans submitted to the City of Miami illustrate the school's goals of preserving the green space and maintaining the existing tree canopy while adding just one new building, a student commons, on La Brisa's seven acres. As a parent of a student at the school, I can tell you first hand that the school follows it's mission to develop students who are not in this world for what they can get out of it, but for what they can put into it. As Commissioner Russell's appointee to the City of Miami Community Relations Board, you probably already know that I am both dedicated and passionate about serving my community and creating positive and lasting impact. Ransom Everglades' ideals and mission align with those values, and it's why I'm proud to be part of the RE family. I am the mother of two Ransom Everglades graduates (Kaili '14; Kane '15) and one current student (Jonathan '19). I can say without the slightest reservation or hesitation that Ransom was one of the best things that happened to our family. Beyond its drive for academic excellence, the school instills a love and passion for community and recognizes the needs of others. Contrary to the typical image conjured up when you think of expensive private prep schools, RE fosters a very open, inviting culture in which every student is equally empowered. Students at RE don't just get involved, they get immersed in their community. My older children did when they were there and my youngest continues to volunteer in a number of community activities. In fact, my eldest will be coming back to Miami to teach as a TFA corp member because she understands the importance of both a good education and of giving back. I hope you will consider these comments as you make your decision tomorrow. Warm regards, Virginia M. My name is Josh Stone, and I've been working at Ransom Everglades for twelve years. Over the course of my time here, I have become increasingly proud of the role my school plays in the community. In addition to facilitating a number of volunteer opportunities for our students which benefit others, we have made our campus and resources available to support local citizens, endeavors, and organizations. We tutor, host performances, support populations in need —through hands-on initiatives and through various kinds of fundraisers; we provide food and resources for those in need; and we are consistently looking for ways to take care of Biscayne Bay. Most importantly, however, we work tirelessly as educators to inspire our students to care about and engage with their local community. Many of our students do come from privileged families, and we strive to develop their minds and hearts so that they will leverage their influence positively. As I tell friends, families, and collaborators, our students are likely to find themselves in positions of power and influence when they grow up, and we work to make them as sophisticated and as empathetic as possible. Ransom Everglades strives to make the world a better place by producing skilled students who care —and their work begins right here in Miami. Again, I want to thank you for your support as we strive to improve our institution and broaden the scope of our positive influence. Ransom teaches many generations of Miami children (including my own) the values of long term vision, stewardship and a desire to give back rather than just take. The plans the school have for the property in my opinion reflect this ethos. The property will be essentially preserved with the addition of just one building for the students. Las Brisas is a beautiful green enclave that deserves to be cherished and protected. I personally believe that Ransom would be the most ideal institution to fulfill this mission. I would ask you all to give this matter your serious consideration and thus to allow Ransom to underwrite the protection and enjoyment by many thousands of young people over time of a beautiful plot and an important part of the heritage of the Grove. We chose Miami over other places as the wonderful weather, the ocean and its diversity made us feel at home. We soon discovered how historic Miami is, how much hard work, planning and sacrifice went into the conservation efforts, especially the Biscayne Bay and the Everglades. Despite the urban sprawl and pressure, the City of Miami has excelled in efforts to conserve the space. Today is a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' for you as city officials to continue the conservation theme. The joining of La Brisa with Ransom Everglades Upper School is a historic moment. Ransom Everglades takes the responsibility of being a good neighbor in Coconut Grove seriously. Ransom's plans for La Brisa are visionary and far exceed the City's expectations. The best part is that this private land inaccessible to public in the past will now be part of the school. The school has great reputation for being inclusive and focuses on making Miami better and stronger. Hence, they will conserve the region for the future. The school itself is evidence of their thinking. Each generation (highly diverse and represent the city population) that graduates from the school will appreciate the access to Biscayne Bay and share the valuable resource with the community. The school's response to Irma, and how they dealt with the boats that washed up onto their football field give evidence of their resilience, strength and character. We have been proud to be Miamians, and now we urge the City Commissioners to do the right thing for the future. Nothing will conserve the Bay more than a string of schools lining the shores, getting to watch the impact on the ecosystem and feel the urgency to do the right thing. Thanks for considering our plea! Thanks for inviting concerned people to write in from out of town. I'II be interested in the outcome. Theo Dear Commissioner: I am writing today to express my support for the adoption of the development plan for the property in Coconut Grove known as La Brisa. As you are aware, it was purchased by Ransom Everglades School with a desire to both enhance the current school campus while preserving much of the beauty of the La Brisa property. Both properties have a long history in Miami. I, too, was bom and raised in Miami. My mother's childhood home is on the Historic Register as one of the first homes in Miami Shores. My father worked in Miami all his life, starting with First Federal Savings and Loan just after his tour in WWII. My roots run deep in Dade County. I attended Ransom Day Camp when I was very young and then attended middle and high school at Ransom School for Boys, merging with Everglades School for Girls in 1974, two years before my graduation. I strongly believe in the mission and values delivered by this institution. They served me very well. It is for these reasons that I feel the addition of the La Brisa property will add to the students' experience and, at the same time, demonstrate to not only the Ransom Everglades community, but the community at large, that the development can be done in a harmonious way with the neighborhood. The opportunity to expand the campus has never been available before and the ability to enhance the level of education at Ransom -Everglades lies before all of us. The school community needs your support of this expansion plan. Please take the time to look at the level of commitment the school has demonstrated in the planning of the addition of the one building coupled with the preservation of trees and flora on the property. Just as the current upper school campus is home to the historic building, The Pagoda, collectively we can make history by approving the expansion plan of the property, some 122 years after Paul C. Ransom established the Pine Knot Camp school in 1896. Thank you for your consideration and the support of a fine educational institution. Sincerely, Theo Etzel '76 W. On the basic merits, it seems clear that Ransom's submitted plans for La Brisa not only preserve its beauty and character, but will increase its visibility to a meaningful number of Miami and other Miami -Dade County and South Florida residents and visitors. Places like La Brisa make a far more valuable contribution to the surrounding community when they become organic and vibrant parts of meaningful community institutions. This brings us to Ransom, and its plans, and why there could unlikely be a better alternative to unlock and release the benefits of this property in an important way. Ransom Everglades is not only a premier Miami institution with a deep and successful history, but as an academic and intellectual institution it is recognized nationally, customarily in "top 25° and "top 50" lists of the best preparatory high schools in the United States. Its students have for decades matriculated to the best institutions of higher learning, risen to the tops of their professions and other pursuits, and, most important, the majority of them seem to remain or return to our county, where our community as a whole reaps the benefits of their achievements and contributions. Increasing the quality, resources and physical beauty of Ransom through this integration, as presented to the Commission, will only further enhance its nation-wide prominence, which in tum is an enhancement for Miami, the county and South Florida generally. South Florida is known for many wonderful things. Let the academic and intellectual excellence of Ransom, and the many other positive values and good works it permeates throughout our community on several levels, be further enhanced, and further enrich the Miami culture and experience, through the approval of these plans. My daughter currently attends RE as a seventh grader, and I graduated from RE in 1982. You'll likely hear plenty of testimony documenting RE's longstanding focus on our community, and its reputation as one of the USA's top secondary schools. The school's achievements since its founding in 1903 are a matter of record, but the values it teaches —values its students and alumni adhere to in life and business as a matter of course —offer a less obvious yet important and meaningful contribution to our city and the world. As a Miami -based entrepreneur and executive coach, I relish the opportunity to do business with members of the RE community. I confidently assume that integrity, innovation, clear communication, and social accountability will be de facto elements of every professional relationship with an RE graduate. How does this reflect on RE's petition to annex the adjacent La Brisa property? • Be confident that RE leadership will respect the historic and environmental character of the land. • Be confident that when plans get executed, what's implemented will align with what was approved. • Be confident that any facilities constructed on the land will both serve the community and prepare students to do so. • Be confident that the school's expansion request is not about real estate holdings; it's about extending value to all. Please approve RE's request to unite the La Brisa property with the existing upper school campus, and then hold the school to the highest standards of service and stewardship. You will find your expectations exceeded, our community enriched, our history respected, and our environment protected. Plenty of developers would make those promises; only RE will keep them. Its students have for decades matriculated to the best institutions of higher leaming, risen to the tops of their professions and other pursuits, and, most important, the majority of them seem to remain or retum to our county, where our community as a whole reaps the benefits of their achievements and contributions. Thank you for taking the time to listen to this opinion. I believe there are, overwhelmingly, many who feel and believe the same as I do. I am a strong proponent of this unification on several fronts given my long history with Ransom. I am the CEO and co-founder of the Children's Bereavement Center, an organization that provides peer support to grieving children and families. We have been the fortunate recipients of Ransom's generosity for over 16 years; our groups meet weekly on the Ransom campus in donated rooms by the school. Along with other programs in the community, such a Breakthrough Miami and St. Alban's School, Ransom has embraced the community's children and families, sharing their resources, their talented staff and students, and their beautiful campus to improve the lives of others. Finally, as a neighbor of Ransom Everglades School, living doors away in the Cloisters Community in Coconut Grove, I am grateful for the culture and value brought to our community given Ransom's expansion of facilities. Beyond offering a world class education, Ransom has brought concerts, world renowned speakers, Ted X, and art shows for generations to Coconut Grove. It's presence has brought recognition and value to our neighborhood. The expansion of the campus presents additional opportunities for learning and a larger student base of Ransom students as well as opportunities for greater engagement and program offerings for the larger community. (Amended SAP) My husband as well as our three children graduated from Ransom, but I am not writing on their behalf. I am writing as the Director of the "South Florida Youth Foundation". Nineteen years ago, in a very grassroots manner I started a most wonderful journey that took me to the poorest parts of Liberty City and Overtown. I have worked mostly with issues of poverty, with the mission of helping kids finish high school and get an education to fight the cycle of poverty. My colleagues have been the City of Miami Police Department and the Miami Dade Public Schools When my children attended Ransom so many who knew what I did reached out and offered their help. Parents, teachers and staff all offered. In middle school, clothes were collected, books were donated, we raised money from bake sales, we bought school supplies for those that needed, and all involved were so happy to know that their efforts could benefit others. Most importantly, I believe "bridges were built". We all understood that these pockets of poverty were so much closer than we thought and how much could be shared. As everyone got more involved and my kids attended high school we worked on a grander scale. There was Tucker Tutoring, involvement with "The Bamyard Center, and children from the neighborhood who came every Christmas and were partnered up with students to spend the holiday, to name a few programs. There was a community pool built with a very special mission: to share it with any neighbors that needed to leam how to swim. I was recently at a meeting with the Major Of Community of City Miami Police and she mentioned that this summer her PAL kids would learn to swim at Ransom! One year, a group of thoughtful students raised money through bake sales to help disabled students at Booker T Washington fund one of their programs. A fantastic day in 2013 was enjoyed by all when the BTW band surprised the Ransom students in the football field with a wonderful concert! All kids ended up dancing together in the field! But something even more special awaited: an exchange program that is now four years strong. This program has created a bond that might have never existed. It has enriched students and staff and enriched all lives equally. It has established bonds between the kids that are still present, years after graduation. The last day always involves heart wrenching testimonials of new friendships that might have never been. Breakthrough Miami is another outstanding program that allows high preforming students from economically challenged backgrounds to equalize opportunities in applying to colleges. Ransom has been Submitted into the publ`c record for item(s) L, N on \ / 7'i / City Clerk a leader in this program and today many other private schools have followed this lead. It is an extraordinary opportunity for all, including students from Ransom who again forge new relationships that might have never been. What Ransom receives back from its involvement is treasured by all, of great importance and so valued. I began attending Ransom Everglades in 1998 as a nervous, insecure and confidence -lacking sixth grader. I graduated from Ransom's Upper School in 2004 with a sense of purpose and a zest for life and learning, largely due to the sense of community that Ransom fostered (and continued to foster), as well as the lasting impact of the dozens of truly brilliant educators that I received instruction from throughout my scholastic tenure there. Many of these teachers, coaches and advisers are still my friends to this day. When I return to visit Ransom, I see these teachers - now friends - and I feel welcomed, like I'm home. All this is to say that Ransom Everglades is a truly special place. It is a place where young men and women grow to become confident and successful individuals. It is a place where those involved - from the kitchen staff, to students, faculty, administrators and alumni - feel impelled to stay involved throughout the course of their lives. Why? Because Ransom Everglades cares about its community, both internal and surrounding. I moved back to Miami five years ago to join the administration of Ransom Everglades. Having been in education for nearly two decades, I thought that I understood the world of independent schools. I might even say that I had grown a bit complacent about "private schools." To be honest, when I boarded a plane to Miami, I wasn't expecting to find such a special and dedicated community. Setting food on the school campuses, I was struck by the students. Not only were they clearly bright and energetic, but they embodied a spirit of service and community engagement that I have never seen at an independent school. I listened as students excitedly talked about their service trips to Haiti just after the earthquake, how they grow and plant endangered mangroves every year to help sustain the environment of South florida, I watched a preview of their upcoming play (the Laramie Project) which highlighted the school's commitment to inclusivity, and I saw a group of students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds authentically and meaningfully engage with one another. Ransom Everglades is not "just another prep school." It is truly a mission driven community with students who give back to the world. They are instilled with a drive for service that continues well beyond their time here. I hope that you will continue to support school as it seeks to expand and continue to live the legacies of its founders Paul Ransom and Marie Swenson. As a former public servant for South Florida for over 15 years, a Coconut Grove resident, a proud parent of Ransom Everglades students, and a husband of a Ransom Everglades educator, I want to convey my strong and unconditional support for the proposal to unite the La Brisa property with Ransom's Upper School Campus. Throughout the last decade, I have witnessed firsthand how Ransom Everglades contributes to our community by its commitment to values -based character building and education, and its commitment to enrich our beautifully diverse South Florida with various service -oriented programs and outreach efforts to under-resourced neighborhoods. I have been blown away as to how Ransom constantly opens its doors to make sure that our community is truly connected and integrated. Ransom has proven to be a considerate and thoughtful neighbor in the Coconut Grove area. The school is led by incredibly talented and caring professionals who make it their vocation to teach their students - by example - on how their number one mission is to use the gift of a first-rate education to help enrich, serve, and give back to their ever - changing and surrounding environments. The approval of this plan will provide this wonderful institution with a greater platform to continue its important mission of making Miami a stronger and more vibrant and united city. Thank you for your attention to this message and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. In my years at Ransom Everglades, I have seen the impact that our 2,300 + graduates have had on our community. 0ur students have tutored students at Frances S. Tucker Elementary School, supported St. Albans Children Enrichment Center, cleaned our beaches, planted propagules seeds. Our School has provided facilities, personnel, resources to Breakthrough Miami (a tuition free academic enrichment program) and the Children's Trust. We host TEDx Coconut Grove and have provided many non-profit organization including Children's Bereavement Center space to help facilitate their very needed programs. We also provide support to our local government like the Coconut Grove Fire Department that frequently use our Aquatic Center for training. In addition, we have assisted over 2,700 families with financial aid at an approximate cost of $56 million. Our students, present and past, give far more to our Community now than they take. They live the heart of our mission which is to "believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it". I ask each of you for your help and support so that our School can continue to do the great things we do for our Community, our State and our Nation. Sincerely, Diana C. It has been a privilege to see the city grow not only physically but also culturally during our time here. We have witnessed the opening of the New World Center, The Perez Art Museum, and the Frost Science Museum. We have been enthusiastic participants of the ever-growing Art Basel celebration; the Cleveland Orchestra residency at the Arsht Center and the many fairs the city has come to host. It is a source of great pride to have lived at a time where such outstanding cultural additions have enriched the community. This will not only impact our city today but for many future generations to come. We strongly believe the Ransom Everglades' La Brisa plan will further strengthen this growth. The school aims to preserve the green space and existing tree canopy and plans only to add one building on the property. This means not only the Ransom Everglades community will enjoy the preservation of the green space but the entire city. The school's tradition has always been to support and contribute to the entire community through its many outreach programs. It has always been a responsible and respectful neighbor that will strive to surpass any requirements. We urge you to approve the La Brisa plan as one of the enriching cultural legacies left by our generation. Sincerely, Ana de Roux Murra and family. I am also an employee at Ransom Everglades School and a parent of a Ransom student. I am grateful for this opportunity to write to you today to express my thoughts and feelings about Ransom Everglades as a school and its impact on the community. When I started working here at Ransom, I began to see an amazing level of commitment from students, parents, faculty, and staff to help enrich the community as a whole. These commitments are exemplified in so many ways. Whether it is a school club fundraising for those Tess fortunate, RE students tutoring Tucker Elementary School children after school, helping cleanup Bill Beggs beach, or just the daily conversations that I hear at Ransom about how we can make a positive impact on our community and the world at large. We at Ransom also give back by hosting numerous sporting events for people in the Miami community and create venues like TEDx that bring important topics to Miami. Throughout many years, Ransom Everglades School has shown our commitment and many contributions to Coconut Grove and Miami as a whole. We are holding true to our mission that we want and desire to give back more than we receive. I hope that you will support the request for our campus expansion. I can only imagine what the future holds. I have only been at Ransom Everglades School for a year -and -a-half, drawn to the organization because of it's rich history as an excellent educational institution, and to its deep commitment to service and to the neighborhood which surrounds the School. During my tenure, I have seen and experienced validation of my initial draw in myriad ways. From our student tutors at Tucker Elementary, to the delight of our little guests seeing Santa at our Annual St. Alban's Day, to our connections forged between students at RE and those from Booker T. Washington School during our annual exchange, to our clean-up in the mangroves on the shores of the Bay, to the hours spent by our students volunteering with Best Buddies, donating bald dolls to children undergoing chemotherapy at Nicklaus Hospital, to our faculty volunteering their time and talents along the Miami Marathon course, to exhibiting at local museums, to guiding students from Breakthrough Miami. While certainly not an exhaustive list, it speaks volumes to the values and commitment Ransom Everglades has to it's mission, it's location, and it's strength. The vibrant and strong City of Miami also is strengthened by institutions, traditions, diversity, inclusion, traditions and excellence, the very same values that Ransom Everglades promotes every day. The Ransom Everglades proposed SAP will allow the School to further its pursuit of excellence, and maintain and protect a beautiful slice of history. The improvements to the School will be extended to the surrounding community, because that is what Ransom Everglades has always done, sharing our knowledge, serving others, and enhancing the City. I am in complete support of the Ransom Everglades plan put before the City and hope the City agrees! With gratitude and respectfully submitted, Marty T. As a 33 year faculty member, I have seen how much our school has hanged the lives of thousands of Miami families. Just recently, a graduate of our school, who is from the West Grove, came to my classroom to say how going to our Breakthrough program and then to our school had changed her life, and to express her gratitude for this blessing. Our school credo is to have graduates who want to give more to the world than they take from it, and we preach that credo to our students every day starting with the first day of sixth grade, and also put it into practice on a daily basis, through such programs as our middle school Storytime club reading to children at the Bam Yard every other Friday afternoon, or every athletic team doing a service project in the Miami community. I remember when 1 proposed the concept of SummerBridge, now Breakthrough, to our Headmaster Frank Hogan, in the late 1980's. Without hesitation, he said, let's look into it, go out to look at it in San Francisco, and if you think it is worthwhile, let's do it. There was no discussion of cost, just a desire to help the less fortunate children in Miami. I think our Breakthrough program, and our entire school program, does just that. We are definitely a private school with a public purpose, and approval of our plan before the City Commission will only help us to benefit many thousand more Miami adolescents and families. I know our school wants to use that property in a way that will serve the entire community and also be most respectful of our neighbors. Thank you so very much for your thoughtful consideration of our proposal.
