HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-17-0590City of Miami Resolution R-17-0590 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 3345 Final Action Date: 12/14/2017 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE DESIGNATION, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-136(2) OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, OF THE PLAZA LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHLAND ROAD AND NORTHWEST 14TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "DR. MICHAEL S. GORDON PLAZA," BY MOUNTING A DESIGNATION POST UNDER THE STREET SIGNS AT THE INTERSECTION, SUBJECT TO ALL APPLICABLE PERMITTING REQUIREMENTS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Wifredo (Willy) Gort WHEREAS, Dr. Michael S. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D was a Chicago native who joined the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine faculty in 1966; and WHEREAS, Dr. Michael S. Gordon had a long and distinguished career at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; and WHEREAS, Dr. Michael S. Gordon revolutionized medical education around the world by creating Harvey, the world's first cardiopulmonary patient simulator, and UMedic, an innovative computer- and web -based program, to train physicians, emergency responders, and military personnel to save countless lives; and WHEREAS, the Harvey simulator is a life-sized mannequin that realistically simulates nearly every cardiac disease by varying blood pressure, breathing, pulse, heart sounds and murmurs, and remains the standard for instruction in this area around the world; and WHEREAS, Dr. Michael S. Gordon was the founder and director emeritus of the Michael S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education; and WHEREAS, Dr. Michael S. Gordon worked with then Miami Fire Rescue Chief Carlos Gimenez in the early 1990's to change the training for first responders by developing a life- saving protocol for handling medical emergencies on arrival; and WHEREAS, the first responder training initiative grew into the Gordon Center's Emergency Medical Skills Training Programs, which teaches professionals in 600 Florida agencies and 800+ agencies nationwide and internationally, is designated as the lead training center for the Florida Department of Health's Emergency Response to Terrorism training program, and trains U.S. Army Forward Surgical Trauma Teams before front-line deployment; and WHEREAS, throughout the years, Gordon received numerous awards for innovation in medical education, including the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's most prestigious health care honor, the AXA Advisors Lifetime Award in 2013 and the "Gifted Teacher" Award of the American College of Cardiology, and the pioneer awards from both the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and his alma mater, the University of Illinois; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 3345 (Revision:) Printed On: 3/25/2025 File ID: 3345 Enactment Number: R-17-0590 WHEREAS, Gordon and his wife Lynda have provided ongoing financial support to the Gordon Center, funded scholarships for medical students, and made donations to the Richter Library, Frost School of Music, Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, Department of Athletics, and other programs; and WHEREAS, the City wishes to commemorate the contributions of Michael S. Gordon to the community, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the medical profession by designating the plaza at the intersection of Highland Road and Northwest 14th Street, Miami, Florida, "Dr. Michael S. Gordon Plaza," pursuant to Section 54-136(2) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, by mounting a post under the street signs at the intersection; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this section. Section 2. The designation, pursuant to Section 54-136(2) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, of the plaza at the intersection of Highland Road and Northwest 14th Street, Miami, Florida, as "Dr. Michael S. Gordon Plaza," by mounting a designation post under the street signs at the intersection, is hereby authorized, subject to all applicable permitting requirements. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: 1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
