City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-17-0421 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 2748 Final Action Date:9/19/2017 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S), RENAMING "SPOIL ISLAND A," LOCATED IN BISCAYNE BAY APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER (1/4) MILE SOUTHEAST OF THE TERMINUS OF KIRK STREET AND SOUTH BAYSHORE DRIVE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS DEPICTED IN "EXHIBIT A," ATTACHED AND INCORPORATED, TO "CAPTAIN STUART SORG ISLAND," IN MEMORY OF CAPTAIN STUART SORG, UNITED STATES NAVY, RETIRED, FOR HIS DEDICATION AND SERVICE TO THE CITY OF MIAMI WATERFRONT AND THE WATERFRONT ADVISORY BOARD; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE RENAMING OF SAID ISLAND. WHEREAS, the City of Miami owns the property located in Biscayne Bay approximately one quarter (1/4) mile southeast of the terminus of Kirk Street and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, commonly known as "Spoil Island A" as evidenced by "Exhibit A", attached and incorporated; and WHEREAS, Captain Stuart Sorg dedicated his life to public service, including service in the United States Navy for a combined twenty-six (26) years with tours in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and rising to the rank of a distinguished Navy SEAL; and WHEREAS, Captain Stuart Sorg was a long-time devoted member of the City of Miami ("City") Waterfront Advisory Board and the predecessor Miami Waterfront Board ("Board"); and WHEREAS, Captain Stuart Sorg served with distinction on the Board since its formation in the 1980s, including multiple terms as Chairperson of the Board, until his passing on May 18, 2017; and WHEREAS, as Chairperson of the Board, Captain Stuart Sorg participated significantly in the process of the City's adoption of the Coconut Grove Waterfront Master Plan and was an important advocate for waterfront preservation; and WHEREAS, Captain Stuart Sorg was a devoted and passionate advocate of Biscayne Bay and the Coconut Grove waterfront, was involved in many maritime and sailing activities and organizations in the community, and exhibited great compassion and care for the Spoil Islands in Biscayne Bay; and WHEREAS, Captain Stuart Sorg contributed to the community through his avid participation and membership in both the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and the Coral Reef Yacht Club; and WHEREAS, on June 8, 2017, Mayor Tomas Regalado recommended that the City Commission rename "Spoil Island A" to "Captain Stuart Sorg Island" with a proclamation and memorial tribute from the City; and WHEREAS, on July 11, 2017, the Board recognized Captain Stuart Sorg with recognition and a certificate of appreciation; and WHEREAS, the City and the Board wish to express their gratitude to Captain Stuart Sorg for his steadfast commitment to the City's waterfront for the benefit of current and future residents of the City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission renames "Spoil Island A", located in Biscayne Bay approximately one quarter (1/4) mile southeast of the terminus of Kirk Street and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, as depicted in "Exhibit A", attached and incorporated, to "Captain Stuart Sorg Island." Section 3. The City Manager is directed to take all administrative actions necessary to effectuate the renaming of said island. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: 1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
