HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutionCity of Miami Resolution Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 1580 Final Action Date: 3/9/2017 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING COMCAST CABLE TO INTRODUCE IMPROVED SENIOR DISCOUNT OPPORTUNITIES FOR CABLE TELEVISION AND HIGH-SPEED INTERNET, WHILE PRESERVING THE LEGACY SENIOR DISCOUNT PACKAGE FOR EXISTING CUSTOMERS; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO NEIL SMIT, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF COMCAST CABLE. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Francis Suarez WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is committed to giving back and improving the quality of life for our seniors; and WHEREAS, an enhanced senior discount opportunity will help to bridge the digital divide for seniors, who are often on fixed or low income budgets; and WHEREAS, it is intended that the enhanced senior discount opportunities will enable seniors to get connected to the Internet in their homes and use it to communicate with friends and family, access healthcare and financial information, and enjoy online news and entertainment; and WHEREAS, the City believes that the enhanced senior discount opportunities will help to support the goal of digital equity and inclusion for all residents; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings set forth in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby urges Comcast Cable to introduce improved senior discount opportunities for cable television and high-speed Internet, while preserving the legacy senior discount packages for existing customers. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Neil Smit, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Cable. Section 4. The Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' 1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
