There are no local match for this grant award. Background of Item: This funding will allow the Miami Police Department to increase the level of services provided to the victims of domestic violence. Specifically, the department will utilize the grant funds for overtime hours to close an additional eight (8) cases per month. The extra hours will not only assist in increasing the rate of closed cases, but raise the amount of victims that will receive domestic violence brochures, which have vital information about available support services and legal information. The Domestic Violence Unit hopes to educate and support more victims, and assist them in finding a solution to escape an environment of violence. This effort will continue long after the grant period. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has a strong interest in providing support to the victims of domestic violence; and WHEREAS, the Domestic Violence Unit of the City's Police Department ("D.V. Unit") is dedicated to bringing abusers to justice and continues to make efforts to reduce incidents of domestic violence; and WHEREAS, investigators assigned to the D.V. Unit work closely with victims and the State Attorney's Office to ensure the successful prosecutions of domestic violence cases; and WHEREAS, the D.V. Unit also collaborates with other victim advocate programs to assist domestic violence victims with the appropriate referrals for obtaining services, shelter, and safety; and WHEREAS, the D.V. Unit receives approximately two hundred forty-two (242) cases per month and assists with approximately one hundred (100) additional cases referred to it by the Department of Children and Families; and WHEREAS, the D.V. Unit is in need of obtaining funding for overtime hours of its staff and investigators in an effort to locate offenders and close pending investigations; and WHEREAS, the City applied for and was awarded grant funding in the amount of $10,162.00 from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Justice Assistance Grant ("JAG") Countywide Program subgrant to be utilized by the City's Police Department for overtime hours needed by the D.V. Unit in an effort to close an additional eight (8) domestic violence cases per month; and WHEREAS, this award does not require any local match; and WHEREAS, said grant program is for the period of October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The following new Special Revenue Project is established and resources are appropriated as described below: FUND TITLE: DV — Domestic Violence Unit Project — Miami 2016 — 17 RESOURCES: Florida Department of Law Enforcement, JAG $10,162.00 APPROPRIATIONS: $10,162.00 Section 3. The City Manager is authorized' to execute an agreement, in substantially the attached form, and all necessary documents, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, in order to implement the acceptance and administration of said grant. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.2 APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: nd City Att©r ey 12/2312016 1 The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by the City Attorney including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and City Code provisions. 2 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
