As a neighboring City, we are thrilled to express our support for the Ordinance and your vision to enrich Miami with the welcoming and engaging experience public art offers. Following a proud history of incorporating public art into the fabric of our community, the City of Coral Gables formally adopted our Art in Public Places Ordinance in 2007 and later began collecting fees toward the program. As a result, the City commissioned, and is in the final stages of installing, an outstanding monumental artwork consisting of two sculptures by world-renowned artist Alice Aycock. Soon, we will be commissioning our next iconic artworks as part of the eagerly anticipated Miracle Mile Streetscape development project. In addition to the spectacular presence of quality artworks, Coral Gables is conscious of the broad scope and reflection of our community that such artworks have for visitors and residents working and shopping during the day or relaxing at night. With the growing number of public art programs established in neighboring cities and through the excellence of Miami-Dade's Art in Public Places program, every person can have a free and fluid cultural experience as they travel between our Cities and throughout the County. Public art has been proven to provide an educational experience that is accessible and welcoming to all residents and visitors and consistently impacts the community in a positive way. The City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places program has been an important part of the cultural landscape in Miami Beach for more than 20 years. Currently, the program is in the process of commissioning six (6) internationally recognized artists for the Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion project, with an estimated public art contribution of $7,000,000. The proposed works by these artists exemplify Miami Beach's prestigious quality commitment to commission world class works of public art. The commissioning of these public art works elevates any public art program to a whole new level, bringing artists to the community. In closing, South Florida's cultural scene is growing at an accelerated pace — a pace driven by public art programs throughout Miami -Dade County and the addition of a similar program in the City of Miami will undoubtedly enhance the City of Mia i and Miami -Dade County. Department compiled the estimated Public Art Fee projections based on private development projects with a building valuation of one million dollars or more. Art in Public Places Estimated Fee Projections on Private Development The Department of Planning and Zoning in consultation with the Building Department compiled the following fee projections based on project valuation of one million dollars and over for private development within the City of Miami. Project Type w/ a valuation of a million and over Residential Fiscal Year 2015. * Est. Construction Cost $6,088,400.00 *Best case scenario of $13.2 million average annual public art fees Art in Public Places Staffing Needs Potential Art Fee at 1% $60,884. In order for the successful implementation of the Art in Public Places Program, the Department of Planning and Zoning is seeking to establish a Public Art Division with the following two initial positions listed below to administer said program. The County's Public Art Committee has the sole authority to decide what works of art get commission on City projects. See Exhibit "A" for projected MDC fees to be paid to County.
