SMASH is a part of the `Smash the Slumlords" Campaign, which has been going on since March of 2014. We have been meeting with mem- bers of the community about what their dreams and aspirations are, and how slumlords, gentrification and the Affordable Housing Crisis are preventing them from achieving those dreams. We are excited to finally be so dose to the creation of permanent afford- able housing for the low-income communities of Miami. Please learn about us and our mission so that we can create the future of Miami to- gether as one people, united. City Clerk SMASH's Mission: The creation of a Community Land Trust that will adequately address the needs of inner-city Miami residents affected by the symptoms of gentrifi- cation (slumlords, rising rents, lack of community control), and that is shaped, developed and implemented by those same residents. What is a Community Land Trust (CLT)? CLTs are nonprofit organizations— governed by a board of CLT resi- dents, community residents and pub- lic representatives —that provide last- ing community assets and perma- nently affordable housing opportuni- ties for families and communities. CLTs develop rural and urban agricul- ture projects, commercial spaces to serve local communities, affordable rental and cooperative housing pro- jects, and conserve land or urban green spaces. However, the heart of their work is the creation homes that remain permanently affordable, providing successful homeownership opportunities for generations. How would a CLT Benefit Liberty City? A CLT would allow the residents of Liberty City affected by slumlords to take back control of their land. The board of the CLT would be comprised of Liberty City residents, and anyone else they feel is necessary to be able to run a successful affordable housing project. This Board decides the details about the project itself, including: • Who gets to live in the affordable housing? • How much it will cost? • How much the rent will be? • The requirements for applicants who want to live there • The kinds of services that may be provided on -site? • How much they can sell a unit for and when? These and other details are important for maintaining affordability and pre- venting new slumlords from taking con- trol of the properties for financial gain. When will the CLT, and the permanent affordable housing be created? The CLT first needs to acquire prop- erty to be developed, and then ac- quire the financing to develop it. Those two steps alone could take months if not years. However, SMASH is currently in talks with sev- eral sponsors that are interested in making this project happen. In addition we are part of the "Smash the Slumlords" campaign which includes the tech hub business called WORLDS (Work and Organiza- tion Resource Location Developed by STS). This business will be com- pletely controlled by members of the community, and will continue to pro- vide the necessary subsidy over the long-term that will help preserve affordability!
