Goals
:• Develop a comprehensive initiative to
evaluate the risk factors for cancer within the
fire service.
•: Establish a comprehensive plan to prevent
cancer in the City of Miami Department of
Fire -Rescue.

fire service.

minimize cancer in the City of Miami
Department of Fire -Rescue.
:• Established a Comprehensive Cancer
Prevention Program Committee with both
Management and Labor representation.

• Evaluated adequacy of PPE.
• Evaluated adequacy of "Maintenance and Cleaning"
of PPE.
• Renewed and revised "bunker gear cleaning and
maintenance" contract with vendor.
• Replaced gear determined to be out of date and or
non -compliant.
• Ensured bail out harness compliance with all gear.
• Ordered and distributed a 2nd hood for all
members.

• Assured each fire station has an extractor and dryer
for PPE.
• Ensured working washer and dryer in each station
for uniforms.
• Acquired ample resources to respond to fire
stations for bunker gear replacement.
• Currently maintain 60 sets of bunker gear for
immediate issuance.

• Installed passive ventilation systems in all fire
stations (except Station 13).
e Installed alarms in conjunction with passive system
(carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxides of
nitrogen).
:• Education and Prevention
• Posted an array of helpful cancer awareness,
education, and help links on the FireNet.
• Improved physicals with increased cancer detection.

Ongoing Initiatives
•: Apparatus Room
• Install Passive Exhaust System at Station 12.
• Air sampling studies in all stations with passive
exhaust systems.
Negative Pressure Systems in bunker gear storage
areas (8 Stations).
• Identify and install bunker gear storage solutions
for stations without isolated storage capability
(Storage pods at 5 Stations).
• Bunker Gear Storage Lockers.
• 750 members

• In-house bunker gear cleaning and maintenance program.
• Second set of bunker gear.

• Vehicle based filtration system for apparatus 2006 and
older (1 3 Units).

• Install carbon monoxide detectors in station living quarters.
❖ Education and Prevention
• Initial and continuing education regarding cancer
awareness and prevention.
