HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-16-0406City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-16-0406 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 16-01111 Final Action Date: 9/8/2016 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CONDEMNING THE ABUSE OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKEY ARISING OUT OF THE 2016 TURKISH COUP D'ETAT ATTEMPT; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMAAND THE MEMBERS OF THE 114TH UNITED STATES CONGRESS. WHEREAS, on July 15, 2016, a faction within the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the government of Turkey by coup d'etat; and WHEREAS, in the aftermath of the failed coup d'etat, the Turkish government, in particular President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, began using the attempted overthrow of the government to purge Turkish society of dissidents and political opposition; and WHEREAS, over 60,000 Turkish individuals not involved in the uprising have been subjected to purges and other human rights abuses; and WHEREAS, the City Commission condemns the human rights abuses in Turkey by its government; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby condemns the abuse of human rights in Turkey arising out of the 2016 Turkish coup d'etat and condemns the same. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President Barack Obama and the Members of the 114th United States Congress. Section 4. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
