And there are many more. However, what has prepared me for the role of volunteer for this Community Advisory Board has been direct interaction with the Miami Police Department from the chiefs to the patrol officers since March of 2012. 1 grew up with the notion of "Officer Friendly". My brother is a Marine and a City of Miami police officer. I respect and admire the work which our men and women in blue do, but it has been a difficult and oftentimes frustrating experience in dealing with the police. It was the first time in my life, ever since I moved into my neighborhood, where I finally understood why residents felt angry and/or afraid of the police instead of feeling protected by them, The 45th Street Block in my neighborhood was well-known to all the residents. Very rarely would anyone want to drive through it. Very rarely would the residents from 45th Street come out of our homes, other than to get in our cars and leave for work. It was an uphill battle with the police to get our block safe again. We had 2 murders, 24/7 drug activity and a bad cop. Now we have the first Crime Watch Street in the Buena Vista neighborhood. Our success came from our residents unifying and holding the police accountable. As a community chairperson, I have the police come to every single meeting of ours, It is important for the police to hear the voices of the people they are paid to protect. It is important the police are educated in the effect their treatment of us could have, and how their actions could easily turn a good experience to a deadly outcome. I also have monthly meetings with our Lieutenant, Lt, Lillie Harris, who oversees our neighborhood, to discuss the crimes that have been committed in our neighborhood and where the police are in their investigations so that we may follow-up together with our residents. Our Lieutenant has arranged to have police roll call in our park, and we've brought our residents out, especially our youth, so that they can speak one-on-one with the police and let them know of their experiences with police. 1 have constant communication with Chief Llanes, Assistant Chief Colina, Major Cunningham and Lieutenant Harris, with the goal of bettering our residentslives by suggesting ways to better communicate with our residents, tapping into their resources and providing constructive criticism. I have also been on a ride -along with the Miami police and also am in the citizens four -week academy course (1 Saturday each week), all in an effort to have a more global understanding of police procedures, policies and objectives and to bring back as much information as I can to the community. There is much work to be done to improve our police department. I can assure you I have gained much insight from my experiences and my residents' experiences that would prove me an asset in providing the necessary critical feedback to the Community Advisory Board. You can count on my long-term commitment.
