A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 30TH AVENUE FROM SOUTHWEST 9TH STREET TO SOUTHWEST
13TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "DAMAS DE BLANCO WAY"; FURTHER
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO
THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES,
WHEREAS, the Damas de Blanco, which translated to English means "Ladies in White",
represent the fight against injustice and human rights violations in Cuba; and
WHEREAS, in 2003, the Cuban government arrested, tried and sentenced seventy-five (75)
human rights defenders, independent journalists, and librarians to prison terms of up to twenty-eight
(28) years; and
WHEREAS, the wives and families of these 75 people formed the Damas de Blanco to protest
these imprisonments and to fight the injustices of the Cuban government; and
WHEREAS, the group of women protest such injustices by attending Mass each Sunday
wearing white dresses, and peacefully walking through the streets of Havana, Cuba's capital; and
WHEREAS, the Damas de Blanco oppose human rights violations committed by the Cuban
government through non-violent means and strive to bring international attention to the situation in
Cuba by writing letters to foreign dignitaries, as well as Cuban officials, advocating for the release of
political prisoners on the island; and
WHEREAS, to honor the Damas de Blanco, both within the island and in exile in Miami, the
City of Miami wishes to codesignate Southwest 30th Avenue from Southwest 9th Street to Southwest
13th Street, Miami, Florida, as "Damas de Blanco Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted
by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this section.
Section 2. Southwest 30th Avenue from Southwest 9th Street to Southwest 13th Street, Miami,
Florida, is codesignated as "Damas de Blanco Way."
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of
Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, Miami -Dade County Public Works/Waste Management and the
United States Postal Service,
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature
of the Mayor. {1}

{1 } If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
