GORDON SCHOLARSHIP FUND"; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ACCEPT A DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $10,000.00, AND RECURRING VARYING REVENUE IN THE FUTURE, FROM THE MIAMI FIRE FIGHTERS' BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION, DONATED BY THE ESTATE OF DR. MICHAEL S. GORDON FOR THE PURPOSE OF FUNDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO PAY FOR COURSES REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A PARAMEDICS LICENSE TO BE AWARDED TO SELECTED GRADUATES OF THE CITY OF MIAMI 5000 ROLE MODELS EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES CADET PROGRAM; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS, IN A FORM ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY ATTORNEY, FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF SAID DONATION. WHEREAS, Michael S. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., is a philanthropist and the founder and director emeritus of the Michael S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education; and WHEREAS, the Michael S. Gordon Scholarship Fund is a scholarship that provides an award of financial aid to selected graduates of the 5000 Role Models Emergency Medical Services ("EMS") Cadet Program and is to be applied towards educational expenses for courses required to obtain a paramedic license; and WHEREAS, paramedics are advanced providers of emergency medical care and are highly educated in such matters pertaining to anatomy and physiology, cardiology, medications, and medical procedures; and WHEREAS, the 5000 Role Models EMS Cadet Program is an exciting endeavor collaborated by the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, Inc., the City of Miami Fire -Rescue Department, Miami -Dade County Public Schools, and Miami -Dade College; and WHEREAS, the 5000 Role Models EMS Cadet Program provides Miami -Dade County at -risk youth between the ages of eighteen (18) and twenty-five (25) years old, who lack access to educational and employment opportunities due to socio-economic conditions, the opportunity to participate in emergency responder training to acquire certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, as well as acquire credits towards a college degree to increase their future employability and success in the emergency responder field; and WHEREAS, the Miami Fire Fighters' Benevolent Association ("MFFBA") is a non-profit association, comprised of current and retired City of Miami Firefighters, that involves itself with community and national issues, receives donations through a 501(c)(3) charitable fund, and distributes those funds in their entirety back to those in the community that are in need; City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File Id: 16-00801 (Version: 1) Printed On: 5/14/2018 File Number: 16-00801 Enactment Number: R-16-0310 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The new Special Revenue Project for the City of Miami's Fire -Rescue Department, entitled "The Michael S. Gordon Scholarship Fund", is established. Section 3. The City Manager is authorized {1} to accept the donation of $10,000.00 and recurring varying revenue in the future, from the MFFBA donated by the estate of Dr. Michael S. Gordon for the purpose of funding scholarships used to pay educational expenses for courses required for paramedic licensure for at -risk youth selected as participants from graduates of the City of Miami 5000 Role Models EMS Cadet Program. Section 4. The City Manager is further authorized {1} to execute the necessary documents, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, for the acceptance of said donation. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor {2} Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
