Kemp, Fire Chief Freddy Delgado, Local 587 President Goals Develop a comprehensive initiative to evaluate the risk factors for cancer within the fire service. ❖ Establish a comprehensive plan to prevent cancer in the City of Miami Department of Fire -Rescue. Obtain funding to accomplish each of our identified objectives. 3/7/2016 Objectives Assess personal protective equipment (PPE) Implement Environmental Protection Systems (Exhaust Removal) Implement early cancer prevention and protection (Diagnostic) Develop Awareness / Educational initiative 3/7/2016 LComprehensive Program ❖All personnel r Total workforce approach Labor / Management initiative Established committee Initial and continuing education Firenet links r Developing awareness and prevention curriculum 3/7/2016 Completed Initiatives • Developed a comprehensive initiative to evaluate the risk factors for cancer within the fire service. • Established a comprehensive plan to minimize cancer in the City of Miami Department of Fire -Rescue. -• Established a Comprehensive Cancer Prevention Program Committee with both Management and Labor representation. 3/7/2016 Completed Initiatives (cunt.)_ ❖ PPE r Evaluated adequacy of PPE. • Evaluated adequacy of "Maintenance and Cleaning" of PPE. • Renewed and revised "bunker gear cleaning and maintenance" contract with vendor. Replaced gear determined to be out of date and or non -compliant. Ordered and distributed a 2nd hood for all members. 3/7/2016 Completed Initiatives (cunt.)_ ❖ PPE (cont.) r Assured each fire station has an extractor and dryer for PPE. • Ensured working washer and dryer in each station for uniforms. Acquired ample resources to respond to fire stations for bunker gear replacement. Currently maintain 60 sets of bunker gear for immediate issuance. 3/7/2016 Completed Initiatives (cunt.) :•Apparatus Room r Installed passive ventilation systems in all fire stations (except Station 12). • Installed alarms in conjunction with passive system (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen). ❖ Education and Prevention Posted an array of helpful cancer awareness, education, and help links on the FireNet. • Improved physicals with increased cancer detection. 3/7/2016 Ongoing Initiatives :•Apparatus Room r Install passive exhaust system at Station 12. • Air sampling studies in all stations with passive exhaust systems. • Negative pressure systems in bunker gear storage areas (8 Stations). Identify and install bunker gear storage solutions for stations without isolated storage capability (Storage pods at 5 Stations). Bunker Gear Storage Lockers. 750 members 3/7/2016 Ongoing Initiatives (cont.) PPE • In-house bunker gear cleaning and maintenance program. Second set of bunker gear. Apparatus Vehicle based filtration system for apparatus 2006 and older (13 Units). Station Living Area • Install carbon monoxide detectors in station living quarters. Education and Prevention • Initial and continuing education regarding cancer awareness and prevention. 3/7/2016 Funding Shortfall Funding needed to accomplish1 ongoing initiatives. $950,000 3/7/2016
