I am a native Miamian and one of the longest -serving members of the Board, and am pleased to have been able to serve the community in both protecting the community's need for historic and environmental preservation and protecting property rights. During my tenure the Board has dealt with a wide variety of issues relating to development in the several historic districts, as well as emerging issues such as the Little Havana area and the Marine Stadium. One of the most significant tasks we faced in recent years was to assist in finding a solution to the Tequesta relics at MDM's site in downtown Miami, which resulted in a win -win for the City and the property owner. I have enjoyed working with my fellow Board members over the years and look forward to continuing to be of service. Sincerely, David A. Ewan RE: City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board Application Dear Sir/Miss: As a Miami native, preservation of our historic sites and environment has always been very important to me. Miami is a relatively young city but with an astounding amount of history that should be taken care of. I remember reading about the Miami Circle as a child and hoping that such an important historic monument would be preserved. Several years later, I was disappointed to see the landmark Miami Orange Bowl torn down. Being so young, I was not sure how I could get involved and speak out against these types of injustices. The passion to make a difference in my community inspired me to go to law school. During my second summer in law school, I interned at the Coral Gables City Attorney's Office where I learned about the importance of zoning and land use law. My time at the City Attorney's Office furthered my interest in preservation and becoming involved in our community to make a difference. I have recently moved to the historic Edgewater community of the City of Miami and as a Miami local, I frequent many of our historic sites such as Vizcaya, Deering Estate as well as our Florida Everglades. Although I currently work in the commercial sector as an attorney for an aviation company, it would be an honor to be given the opportunity to give back to my City by advancing and supporting City initiatives. Thank you for considering me as a Board Member for the City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Special Zoning Counsel c+ -n ri co to "tr MC N Co) Cn 2J P c-) Fri P1 CJ Projects Related to Historic Preservation The City of Miami is home to 2 National Historic Landmarks. National Historic Landmark status is the highest designation, awarded on a national level by the US Park Service, to sites which are important to the history of this country. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is one of these National Historic Landmarks. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens fronts on Biscayne Bay and is a 5 minute drive from Downtown Miami. Because of this, the neighborhood surrounding Vizcaya has been in high demand for redevelopment. When new development occurs close to Vizcaya, there is the possibility that the new development will impact the Vizcaya National Historic Landmark and the visitors' experience at Vizcaya in a negative way. My involvement as a lawyer in defeating one such proposed new development which threatened the Vizcaya National Historic Landmark, caused me to consider whether there could be a proactive protection given to National Historic Landmarks in Miami's Code. Such protection would not adversely affect private property rights and would also put proposed developers on notice, before they designed their projects, of the special considerations required when developing near a National Historic Landmark. This evaluation led me to propose View Corridor protection for National Historic Landmarks, which came to be codified as part of Miami 21. Not only is Miami's View Corridor legislation protecting the National Historic Landmarks unique to Miami, there is nothing comparable in Florida. This View Corridor Protection legislation puts Miami on par with other cities which protect their heritage sites and National Historic Landmarks. Having protected the View Corridors of and from its National Historic Landmarks makes Miami a leader in developing creative solutions for Historic Preservation within the City. Since 2009, '1 have served as pro bono counsel to, and worked with, a group of citizens who have volunteered time and resources to save the Miami Marine Stadium, a public property which has received historic designation from the City of Miami HEP Board and haa, aiso been designated one of the 11 most endangered historic plades by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. -t co 31.3 1 CD rn N:\Gen\HistoricProjects.wpd = l r w z \r or. Ji nc E r0 t1. This provided a unique opportunity to practice historic preservation together with contemporary hotel and restaurant design at a time when Miami Beach was experiencing a radical economic and urban transformation. From his design work at the iconic Clevelander Hotel to the timeless Raleigh Hotel, Todd played key role in the early years of Miami Beach's revitalization. Todd's design work first expanded into municipal projects like the 10th Street Auditorium on Ocean Drive, the Flagler Memorial Monument on :t Monument Island, and the Miami Beach Headquarter Fire Station on Dade Boulevard. He also was involved in community projects; The Hispanic Community Center/Unidad on Normandy Isle and just recently completed the Miami Beach Jewish Community Center on Pinetree Drive. is Over the past decade Todd further expanded the firm's practice to other communities designing the exclusive Beach Club at Fisher Island, the 5 Star Espa at Acqualina Resort & Spa in Sunny Isles, and the luxury Costa d'Este Resort & Spa in Vero Beach. Within these hospitality projects he has also developed a niche for restaurant design. Some of his more notable projects include Tuyo, at Miami Culinary Institute and Jo Ann's Room at the famous Joe's Stone Crab. He is currently designing Porfirio's, a fine dining "street to table" concept from Mexico City and Mastro's Steakhouse, a renowned west coast establishment. Along with his design of commercial properties, Todd developed a strong portfolio of high -end residential projects including distinguished waterfront homes in Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and Golden Beach, as well as the design of the interior architecture for the Mansions at Acqualina. }i TiI*j. yy}/i)}il .Y%}iiUi4 "blot (II certificate oarticipation Vreoenteb to rode( rrag as h This is to certify that the abovementioned individual has attended a briefing on Sunshine Law, Public Records, and the Miami -Dade County Conflict of Interest and Code of Ethics Ordinance.
