A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BYA FOUR -FIFTHS (4/STHS)
AFFIRMATIVE VOTE, CODESIGNATING NORTHWEST 6TH STREET FROM
NORTHWEST 7TH AVENUE TO NORTH MIAMI AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS
"GARTH C. REEVES WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICES.
WHEREAS, Garth C. Reeves was born in Nassau, Bahamas but moved to Miami, Florida four (4)
months after his birth on February 12, 1919; and
WHEREAS, Garth C. Reeves earned a Bachelor's Degree in Printing from Florida Agricultural and
Mechanical University in 1940 and spent forty-six (46) months as a technical Sergeant in the United
States Army serving in the European and Pacific Theatres; and
WHEREAS, Garth C. Reeves returned after the war to work with his father at The Miami Times as
a reporter, columnist, managing editor, editor and publisher; and
WHEREAS, Garth C. Reeves served as organizing Chairman of the Board for National Industrial
Bank, the first integrated bank in the State of Florida, served as President of the bank in 1971, and
became Vice -Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1976 when it was merged into Capital Bank of
Miami; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission would like to honor Garth C. Reeves with this
codesignation for his good works, leadership, vision and inspiration; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 54-137(7) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended,
the codesignation of streets with the name of a living individual shall be by a four -fifths (4/5ths) vote
of the City Commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission, by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote, codesignates Northwest
6th Street from Northwest 7th Avenue to North Miami Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Garth C. Reeves
Way"
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the City of Miami
Police Department, the Fire -Rescue Department, Solid Waste Department, Miami -Dade County
Department of Transportation and Public Works, and the United States Postal Service.

Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor. {1 }
Footnotes:
{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10)
calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall
become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
